The SA20 tournament is closing in on the mid-season break and we take another step there with one match in the competition on Friday which comes from Kingsmead as the Durban’s Super Giants host the Pretoria Capitals.
The Capitals are blazing a bit of a trail at the top of the table and have the chance to go clear here but Durban will go from second to last right up to second if they win such is the condensed nature of the current standings.
Durban’s Super Giants
It has been a mixed start to the season for the Durban’s Super Giants. They have won a couple of matches and lost a couple with the trend in all four that they have been high scoring. You would imagine they will be bracing themselves for another one here which if they win they will head into the second part of the season in a decent position. We have seen home advantage be big for the majority of this event and Durban will look to use it here.
The positive for Durban is that their batting is in good order even though they have made the surprise decision to drop Quinton de Kock down to bat at three. They have scored over 150 in all four of their matches and there is probably a little more to come from that unit too. If they are going to be factors in the overall picture though they have to find a way to stop teams getting away from them at the death when they have the ball in hand.
Pretoria Capitals
The Pretoria Capitals head into this clash as the league leaders courtesy of three wins in their four matches and they probably should have won the one they lost to local rivals Johannesburg Super Kings. Their batting let them down in that match when they were going after what looked to be a comfortable chase but that has been a strong part of their start to the season even though Rilee Roosouw, a marquee player in this competition, hasn’t really hit his stride.
Where the Capitals are going well is with the ball. They have picked up 27 of the 40 wickets available to them. One reason for that is their batters have piled on the runs and teams have had to attack a good looking bowling unit. The other reason is that their bowlers are very good with four international bowling options and they have been backed up strongly in the field too. There might even be more to come from the Capitals which bodes well for them.

Key Players
Given that their bowling has struggled in the tournament so far it seems a little daft picking one out as a key player but Reece Topley could be crucial for the Durban’s Super Giants here. He will open the bowling to two England colleagues and if he can take one or both of those out it would boost the home chances.
Will Jacks is proving to be quite the signing for the Pretoria Capitals. We knew all about his explosive batting but he is a good spin bowling option to get through an over or two and as we saw earlier in the competition he can make things happen in the field too. If he goes well you sense Pretoria will be hard to beat.
Betting
The boundaries at Kingsmead are not the biggest and we have two power packed batting units on show and I expect the boundaries to flow here. In Phil Salt, Will Jacks, Rilee Rossouw and Theunis de Bruyn the Pretoria Capitals have a top four that is so hard to bowl to but in Kyle Mayers, Wiaan Mulder, Quinton de Kock and Heinrich Klaasen, the Durban’s Super Giants aren’t a million miles behind them. I think the edge could come from Pretoria with the ball but both of these teams have surrendered runs at the end of their bowling innings.
These two teams have the ability to really get after the powerplay and while a 40.5 boundaries line is verging towards the level where I wouldn’t want to be on the over, the fact that if the openers get going one or both teams could be into double figures after the powerplay makes me think the over is the bet here. I say that because in Jimmy Neesham and Jason Holder both teams have players who can find the boundary at the death so over 40.5 boundaries will do me in this one.
