SA20 2024 – Joburg Super Kings vs MI Cape Town Tips and Betting Preview

The second set of matches in the new SA20 season begin with a double header of action in the tournament on Saturday with the first of the two games seeing the Joburg Super Kings taking on MI Cape Town at The Wanderers.

Both teams were caught up in the rain in their opening match. Joburg saw their game washed out completely while MI Cape Town were behind on the DLS system when the rain ended their match prematurely so both go in search of a first win here.

Joburg Super Kings

We clearly didn’t get to see anything of how the Joburg Super Kings may or may not have evolved between last season and this one in their first match because they couldn’t even get on the field against the Sunrisers Eastern Cape. That has probably put a little bit of pressure to get on the park and show what they can do here and get a win under their belts. Teams in this tournament look to have compiled their squad in accordance with their home conditions and we will see how well the Super Kings have done in that regard.

I am particularly looking forward to seeing how their batting goes here in Johannesburg. There are some clean hitters of a cricket ball on show for the Super Kings in this tournament and we know the boundaries here are on the short side and the ball flies further at altitude. The other interesting thing will be whether they have enough talent with the ball in hand to restrict sides even for periods of matches because containing teams here is easier said than done.

MI Cape Town

We did get to see a lot more of the MI Cape Town outfit in their opening match against the Durban’s Super Giants. They might well argue that they would have won that match should the rain not have arrived when it did but in truth the match was in the balance but we did see some good things from Cape Town and they might have a competitive edge on their opponents here in that they have at least got onto the park and shook off any rust they might have had.

MI Cape Town went into the season with a daunting looking batting unit and they make immediately good impressions in that department by racking up 207/5 in Durban and could have got more than that at one stage. Where they won’t have been quite as comfortable with their display was with the ball where they were brutally attacked by Heinrich Klaasen but sometimes you just have to hold your hand up when a top class player gets in and gets going and admit they are too good on the day.

Key Players

Faf du Plessis led by example for the Joburg Super Kings last season and he was particularly destructive on this ground and having missed out in the opening game he will be eager to get up and running in style here.

Ryan Rickleton has been on the fringes of the South Africa setup in recent times and he showed why he could have a big future for his national team in the opening game for MI Cape Town. His 87 was wonderfully compiled and he’ll be hoping for another big innings here.

Betting

Whenever cricket is played at The Wanderers my immediate tendency is to look at the sixes line and I am more than happy to get involved with the 12.5 one which has been priced up for this match. We know this is a ground where a lot of sixes are hit because the boundaries are on the tiny side and the ball flies a country mile with the ground very much at altitude in this part of the world. We have two sides who should be ready to tango in terms of six hitting as well.

The MI Cape Town side have just hit 13 sixes in Durban where the ground isn’t much bigger than this one but where the ball flies nowhere near as far as it does here and you would imagine that there is more to come from them too when you consider that the likes of Dewald Brevis was out cheaply. There are definitely sixes to come from this Joburg Super Kings batting unit with clean hitters right the way down. This line looks mighty low for this ground and I’m happy to plough into the over.
