Scottish Open Golf 2022 – Round 3 Tips and Betting Preview

We have reached what is casually known as ‘Moving Day’ in the Scottish Open on Saturday as the players who made the cut will embark on the Renaissance Club track for the third round, each with the same agenda – to set themselves up for a lucrative title on Sunday.

Conditions were very difficult on Friday which caught a number of big names out but we have a mixture of seasoned and less experienced campaigners on the leaderboard and a nice mix of PGA Tour and DP World Tour players.

Round 2 Recap

At the end of the season round it is the PGA Tour player Cameron Tringale who holds a three shot lead on seven under par. He leads fellow PGA Tour players Gary Woodland and Doug Ghim who are both back on four under. There is a decent group of players on three under which include our pre-tournament pick Xander Schauffele, the new US Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick and the in form Jordan Smith. It wasn’t such a good opening 36 holes for the likes of Billy Horschel, Collin Morikawa, Will Zalatoris, Scottie Scheffler, Hideki Matsuyama and Justin Thomas, none of whom will be here for the weekend.

We didn’t offer up a second round preview due to a shortage of time but we came out of the first round with a profit with Rickie Fowler seeing off Padraig Harrington and Jason Kokrak over the opening 18 holes to give us a juicy three ball winner. Some of the profit was eaten into though as neither of the first round leader bets got going so neither of them were able to threaten the 18 hole lead.

Saturday Betting

At the time of writing there is no market for a third round leader but I’m not massively concerned by that as the chances are that I wouldn’t have bet in it anyway. The reason for that is I have Xander Schauffele covered in the outright market and I’m hoping he can make a move on Saturday. The other reason why I wouldn’t take anything is because the leaderboard looks a little bunched up to be able to bet for comfort as someone could easily post something early in the day and then watch on as the wind kicks up and that score holds up.

Saturday 2 Balls

The field go out in two balls for the remainder of the tournament with the leading pair not off the first tee until 15.40 BST so they will get a good chance to look at the course setup on the early coverage. That group sees Gary Woodland out alongside the leader Cameron Tringale. Doug Ghim and Kurt Kitayama go out 11 minutes prior to that. Earlier groups of note include Matthew Fitzpatrick and Rickie Fowler out at 15.07 BST while Jordan Spieth and Jon Rahm go out at 13.28 BST. My bet comes in that final group.

Cameron Tringale vs Gary Woodland

Match tees off at 15.40 BST

The final group of the third round of the Scottish Open sees a Cameron Tringale who is yet to win on the PGA Tour going out alongside a Gary Woodland who didn’t just win a US Open but won it by the coast which will make him comfortable in these conditions.

Tringale has gone well enough in this competition so far but at one stage on Friday he was sat at -11 and ended up on -7. Whether the poor end to the round was him getting a nosebleed about where he was in the tournament or just the conditions only he will know but it won’t have made his dinner taste particularly nice I think it is fair to say. Woodland battled hard on Friday for a two over 72. Tringale heads the field in strokes gained putting this week but he is relying a little too much on his putter for my liking. He is losing ground off the tee and around the greens and we saw him struggling to scramble when out of position on Friday. Woodland is around par for the course in strokes gained off the tee but well above average everywhere else and in conditions that he has gone well in during his career I think the 5/6 on Woodland to win this group is a bit too big.
