Scottish Open Snooker 2022 – Day 3 Tips and Betting Preview

The first round of the Scottish Open concludes and the second round gets underway on another bumper day of action inside the Meadowbank Arena in Edinburgh on Wednesday as the tournament begins to spark into life.

We still have the majority of the big names in the tournament and they will grace the two main tables throughout the course of the day while there are plenty of men capable of pulling off an upset on show too.

Morning Session

There were due to be four matches in the first session of the day as the opening round of the main draw continues but Chang Bingyu has pulled out of his match Thepchaiya Un-Nooh so we are left with three. The former Masters champion Yan Bingtao will headline the session when he goes up against a Liam Highfield who has shown decent form recently. Ryan Day is a tournament winner this season and he will go up against the dangerous Lyu Haotian while in the other match two Chinese players meet as Xu Si takes on Xiao Guodong.

Afternoon Session

The first round concludes in the afternoon session and two men who have ranking titles to their name will grace the main table in the first of the two sets of matches as the Northern Ireland and UK champion Mark Allen takes on Martin Gould while over on the other main table Kyren Wilson will be on show. He goes up against Matthew Stevens. Stephen Maguire will look to make progress when he takes on Ashley Hugill while the other game sees Chen Zifan meeting Jamie Jones.

John Higgins is the star on show in the second set of games in the afternoon session. This is the set of games that will conclude the first round and the Scottish legend will face the former finalist Cao Yupeng on the main table. Jack Lisowski is the next highest ranked player on show. He meets Allan Taylor while Zak Surety will look to build on his win over Stuart Bingham earlier in the week when he takes on Tian Pengfei while Sam Craigie will look to continue his good recent run when he takes on Fraser Patrick.

Evening Session

We move into the second round of the tournament in the evening session with the world champion Ronnie O’Sullivan headlining a really good first set of matches. He takes on the former ranking event finalist Gary Wilson who is playing well at the minute. Mark Selby is on the other main table and he will go up against Robert Milkins in a good looking game. The other two matches look decent in their own right with Anthony McGill meeting Scott Donaldson in an all-Scottish clash while Barry Hawkins goes up against Zhou Yuelong in the other one.

The second part of a stacked evening session sees the exciting Judd Trump back on show. The former world champion will take on a determined Jamie Clarke on the main table. Neil Robertson will be back on show in the second part of the evening session for the third day in a row. He will once again go up against his friend Joe Perry who he lost to at the UK Championship earlier in the month. Elsewhere, Mark Williams will be looking to make it through when he takes on Jimmy Robertson while Ding Junhui faces Joe O’Connor.

Betting

I’ll go with a couple of bets over the course of the day and they both come in that second part of the evening. Mark Williams made a couple of centuries against Andres Petrov in his held over qualifying match but still looked as rough as anything health wise and you wonder if he is there for the taking. If he is then Jimmy Robertson is the perfect player to put him out of his misery. Robertson scores well and doesn’t fear anyone. He had a good win over Pang Junxu earlier in the week where he won 4-2 from 2-0 down and is likely to make life much harder for Williams than Petrov did. I think Robertson is a good thing here.

Speaking of Robertson’s, I’m less convinced that Neil Robertson is such a good thing. He also sounded pretty rough in his interview after his win on Tuesday evening and in truth he didn’t play particularly well so he is there for the taking for Joe Perry like he was when the pair met a fortnight ago in the UK Championship. Perry is playing some nice snooker at the minute and this clearly isn’t a 100% Robertson at present so I’ll back Perry to repeat that win from York in this one.
