Scottish Open Snooker 2022 Qualifying – Day 4 Tips and Betting Preview

The Scottish Open qualifying competition continues on Wednesday when once again 16 players will head to Cannock looking to pick up the one win they need to make it through to the main draw of the second Home Nations event of the year.

We’ve seen some of the higher ranked players who have to go through qualifying on show already this week but there are still a couple of standout names on show over the course of a day with four sessions of play.

Morning Session

The Chinese players have often been saved for the morning sessions in these qualifying competitions and it is no different on Wednesday where we have two of them up in the morning session. It is actually the Swiss ace Alexander Ursenbacher who is the highest ranked player on show. He goes up against the talented Chinese player Chang Bingyu. The other Chinese player on show is Chen Zifan. He will go up against the newest Australian on the tour in the form of Ryan Thomerson.

Early Afternoon Session

You could be forgiven for renaming the first of the afternoon sessions the Thai session as three players from Thailand are on show over the course of it. This is the part of the day where the pick of the matches come as the former Welsh Open champion Jordan Brown takes on the exciting ace Thepchaiya Un-Nooh. The other match sees the British Open semi-finalist Noppon Saengkham going up against his fellow Thai player Mink Nutcharut.

Later Afternoon Session

Two more matches take place in the second of the afternoon sessions. Martin Gould has slid down the rankings over the last 12 months or so and he’ll be looking to arrest that slide as the highest ranked player on show when he takes on an Adam Duffy, who will be looking to take advantage of the poor form of his opponent. The other match sees Michael White, whose stock is very much on the up, taking on the veteran Andy Hicks in what should be an entertaining and high scoring match.

Evening Session

We finish off with another two matches in the evening session as the highest ranked player on show on the day, Hossein Vafaei, takes centre stage. He will be looking to make it into the main draw when he takes on an Ian Burns who has struggled for consistency throughout his time on the tour. The other match in the evening session sees Craig Steadman going up against the former winner of the World Seniors Championship in David Lilley.

Betting

I’ll go with one bet over the course of Wednesday which comes in the form of one of the evening matches as Craig Steadman takes on David Lilley. These two have met a couple of times in the past when it was Lilley who won on both occasions but I think the former seniors champion has regressed a little and now that he is back on the tour and competing regularly I think Steadman is showing one or two signs of improvement this term.

That makes me think Steadman is the one to be on here. He has made 10 breaks over 10 in the eight matches he has played this season and noticeably a couple of those breaks were centuries. I think one of the reasons why he has struggled over the last few years was that he wasn’t scoring heavily enough but there are signs that he is adapting his game to do that. Lilley is no longer on the tour so you never truly know how someone at his stage of his career will be motivated and how hard he’ll be working. He has a couple of wins from six matches this term but they’ve both been against Andres Petrov who looks a little out of his depth at tour level at the minute. I think this is a good time for Steadman to get a win against Lilley.
