The second round of the Scottish Open will take place throughout the day inside the Meadowbank Sports Centre in Edinburgh on Wednesday as we play down to the last 16 of the final tournament of 2024.
In the main the big players who arrived at the tournament made it through the first round so we are assured of some real quality throughout the day, not least as it is the first time in the event that top 32 players can draw each other.
Morning Session
As has been the case all week, we have two matches in the morning session to look forward to and as is usually the way we have the Chinese stars on the baize to compete in primetime back home. Ding Junhui is the main one of those and he will be on the TV table when he takes on Jackson Page in what looks to be a great game. Zhang Anda has made it through to this stage as well and he will look to make the last 16 when he goes up against the former Shootout champion Chris Wakelin in a really tasty tussle.
Afternoon Session
As ever we have a couple of sets of matches in the afternoon session with the world champion Kyren Wilson the headline act in the first part of it. He will take on the home player Stephen Maguire for a place in the last 16. The former world champion Luca Brecel is also on show in this session. He meets Zhou Yuelong in a good looking game. There is another standout game in the early part of the afternoon where Jak Jones takes on Xiao Guodong. The other match sees two outsiders meeting when Xing Zihao takes on another home player in Dean Young.
Mark Allen is the star act in the second part of the afternoon. He has a meeting with Ryan Day to overcome. That will be the match on the TV table but it is the clash between Si Jiahui and Jack Lisowski which should be full of fireworks. Another tasty match is the one which pits the English Open winner Neil Robertson and the Shootout champion Tom Ford against each other. There is one other match in the session and that sees Joe O’Connor battling with Long Zehuang.

Evening Session
We have two sets of games in the evening session as well and the TV match in the first part of the session will see the home star John Higgins looking to make it through to the next round when he goes up against Barry Hawkins. Ali Carter will also look to make progress in the opening part of the day when he faces Robbie Williams while the World Championship semi-finalist Stuart Bingham is another on show. He takes on David Lilley. The other match sees two Asian players battling it out when Ishpreet Singh Chadha faces Wu Yize.
There are just the two matches in the second part of the evening where the main match will see the former champion Mark Selby facing the man who lost out in the final of this competition last year in Noppon Saengkham in what could be a cracking contest. Shaun Murphy will be over on table two in this session and he will hope to dispatch of the lowly ranked Chinese player in Lei Peifan who saw off Hossein Vafaei in the previous round.
Betting
Jack Lisowski beat Si Jiahui at the recent International Championship and he looked pretty good in thrashing Jordan Brown in the previous round. Si Jiahui made the final of the Wuhan Open but he lost out to Xiao Guodong and since then he hasn’t really done much and you wonder if there has been some sort of hangover from that defeat. If there has then you would have to fear for him a little here because Lisowski looks like he is beginning to purr again.
Lisowski played some of the best snooker of the season in beating Mark Selby at the UK Championship last month and went on to beat Ali Carter there as well before the stuttering style of Mark Allen got the better of him. That comes after good runs in Saudi and Wuhan so Lisowski is building up a bank of form which suggests he is coming back to his best snooker. At his best I still think he is better than Si and even at 10/11 I like him here.
Tips
Back J.Lisowski to beat S.Jiahui for a 3/10 stake at 1.91 with Boylesports
