Sky Bet Championship 2021-22 – Top Goalscorer Tips and Betting Preview

We have already previewed the new Sky Bet Championship season in terms of the title contenders but always a popular market to get involved in is the top goalscorer one and there is just enough time to have a look at that before the campaign kicks off on Friday evening.

This is often a competitive market and while the division may lack the stars of the Premier League, there are plenty of accomplished forwards in the competition who are capable of delivering the goods for their team.

2020-21 – Ivan Toney

2019-20 – Aleksandar Mitrovic

Market Leaders

It is 8/1 the field in this market this season with the winner of the Golden Boot of two years ago, Aleksandar Mitrovic, the man favoured to score the most goals. The first thing to wonder is whether he will still be a Fulham player come the end of the transfer window and that is a concern with a number of players in this league. If he is then we know he has the pedigree to deliver a strong campaign but he looks plenty short enough when you consider the bunched nature of the Championship schedule so a Covid-19 ping could see anyone miss four matches if it comes at the wrong time.

Adam Armstrong will start the season as a 9/1 second favourite to be the leading scorer this season but if you like the Blackburn Rovers marksman you are probably just as well to wait until the transfer window closes because there is a strong likelihood that he will be operating in the Premier League by the time September comes along. If Blackburn do somehow keep him all season then he is a leading contender here but that does appear to be a pretty big if.

Karlan Grant and Kieffer Moore come next in the betting at 16/1. Grant has gone well in this division before but hasn’t really ever got going at West Brom. He is likely to be their number one forward this season but he certainly wouldn’t be their only goal threat which would be a concern. Moore would be of more interest but there are concerns that the addition of James Collins is to cover a possible departure of Moore. He’s another who you’d be better off backing come the closure of the transfer window.

On the best prices Rhian Brewster and Dominic Solanke are 18/1 to be the top scorer in the Championship this season. Brewster went well for Swansea in this division a couple of seasons ago but Sheffield United have a lot of attacking options which might be an issue. Solanke bagged 15 goals for Bournemouth last term and the Cherries are expected to go much better this time around so he’ll be a popular selection.

Profile

If you look at the list of top scorers above, we don’t need to be on someone who is going to play for a promoted side which offers up a lot more options from a betting point of view. That said it stands to reason that the teams higher up the table are going to score more goals so in theory players for those clubs are going to be more likely to top score.

I think the thing to concentrate on is the need to be the main man. If we can be on a penalty taker as well then that is all the more sweet as he’ll get a few cheap goals in that manner. When you narrow it down using those trends the market is a little easier to manage.

Betting

In this Covid-19 threatened world I’m not going to pin my colours to a short price and then watch the virus do my dough in. I’ll pick out a couple of value picks instead. Dominic Solanke and Amaut Danjuma both bagged 15 goals for Bournemouth last term yet the former is an 18/1 shot here and the latter is a 50/1 poke. A lot of the attacking emphasis of a Scott Parker side revolves around pace in behind so I fancy Danjuma could be a big player for Bournemouth this season. He is as quick as anyone in this league and while he might not be the best finisher in the world, I expect Bournemouth to create enough chances to allow him a few misses but still bag plenty of goals and he looks a big price at 50/1.

I’ll also take a small punt on a player I’m hoping to be seeing a lot of this season in the Luton Town forward Elijah Adebayo. Luton haven’t scored many goals in their two seasons in the Championship, settling for defensive foundations and getting what they can at the other end under Nathan Jones. That was very much the right approach but there is a clear move to be a more proactive side this term and they have recruited a lot of exciting attacking players to assist with that. The additions of Fred Onyedinma, Admiral Muskwe, Cameron Jerome and Carlos Mendes-Gomes all point to a more attacking intent and with the former Fulham academy graduate very much the main man in the absence of James Collins, Adebayo might offer up the goals to get him in the mix in this market.
