Sky Bet Championship 2021-22 – Wednesday 29th September Matches Tips, TV and Betting Preview

The midweek action in the Sky Bet Championship concludes on Wednesday evening when the 12 teams who weren’t on show on Tuesday night take to the pitch to battle for what could be three valuable points given the congested nature of the table.

We have two of these six matches on the main channels to be able to watch on Wednesday evening and the other four games will all be hiding behind the red button for those who have that particular facility to get stuck into.

Wednesday’s fixtures are as follows: (All 7.45pm, UK TV in brackets)

Barnsley v Nottingham Forest (Sky Sports Arena)

Derby County v Reading

Fulham v Swansea City (Sky Main Event & Sky Football)

Luton Town v Coventry City

Millwall v Bristol City

Peterborough United v AFC Bournemouth

Preview

The two televised matches involve clubs at each end of the table. The main one comes from Craven Cottage where Fulham will look to get their season back on track after just one win in the last four matches when they play host to a Swansea City side who have come out of the close season very slowly. The other TV game sees two teams who have been even worse than the Swans battling it out in what feels like a big match when goal shy Barnsley host a Nottingham Forest side who will be expected to improve under Steve Cooper, but need to after a terrible start to the campaign.

Two of the top three are also in action on Wednesday night. AFC Bournemouth have the chance to go back to the top of the table. They will do that if they can pick up a win at Peterborough, who themselves would like a win to pull themselves a little clearer of the dreaded drop zone. Coventry City could move level on points with the leaders West Brom should they pick up all three points from their trip to a Luton Town who are a lot better than their league position suggests. The other two matches sees two financially troubled sides meeting at Pride Park as Derby County take on Reading while Millwall host Bristol City in the other game.

Betting

I considered taking the over at Fulham where the Swansea defence could be ripe for being picked off but actually since Ben Hamer went between the sticks the Welsh side aren’t conceding quite as many, which makes the three that Luton Town scored against them two Saturdays ago even more appealing. It also makes the over 2.25 goals in the Hatters’ clash with Coventry City very appealing despite the Sky Blues matches not necessarily being the highest scoring so far this season.

Coventry have started the season incredibly well but they are in a false league position. Of their six wins only one of them came against a team who began the midweek matches in the top half and that was against Reading who have conceded the second most goals in the league. That said they are a decent side who will finish well away from relegation danger and in Sweden international Viktor Gyokeres they had the joint leading marksman in the division heading into the week. That makes them dangerous but Luton carry plenty of threat about them too. They are third in the xG table this season which highlights that they are a whole lot better than their league position suggests. In contrast to Coventry’s softer schedule, Luton have already played two of the three relegated sides from the Premier League as well as the three losing playoff teams in their opening nine games. I expect Luton to pick up results from here on in with their exciting brand of football but they are still missing some key defensive cogs which makes me think over 2.25 goals is the better bet here.
