Christmas is usually a busy time in English football and there is a full set of fixtures in League 2 on Boxing Day as all of the sides look for three valuable points as we head towards the halfway stage of the campaign.
Plenty of issues at the top and the bottom of the table will continue to take shape on a busy day on Monday and it will be interesting to see how it all plays out.
Monday’s fixtures are as follows: (3pm unless stated)
Leyton Orient v Crawley Town 13:00
Cheltenham Town v Barnet
Crewe Alexandra v Carlisle United
Grimsby Town v Accrington Stanley
Hartlepool United v Blackpool
Luton Town v Colchester United
Mansfield Town v Morecambe
Newport County v Portsmouth
Notts County v Doncaster Rovers
Plymouth Argyle v Wycombe Wanderers
Stevenage v Cambridge United
Yeovil Town v Exeter City
Big Matches
The game of the day looks like the one at Home Park as the leaders Plymouth host the form side Wycombe. There was plenty of needle in this fixture last season so there will be an interest on and off the pitch. Second placed Carlisle head to free falling Crewe while Doncaster in third go to Notts County.
Portsmouth head to Wales to take on bottom of the table Newport while another one of the form sides in the division – Colchester – head to Kenilworth Road to take on a Luton side who need to get their home form going once and for all.
Best of the Rest
Cambridge are another side in good touch at the minute and they go to the Lamex Stadium to face Stevenage. Grimsby will look to get back to winning ways when they host Accrington while Yeovil will be hoping to push themselves back into the playoff places when they take on Exeter at Huish Park.
Betting
I’m always a little cautious when it comes to betting on Boxing Day. You get some really strange results around this time of the year so having been on a really good run in the division recently I don’t want to give all that back therefore I’m only taking one bet on a card where there isn’t much which jumps out.
Notts County have only won one home match all season and have won just one of their last 10 matches, losing their last six in the league. They suffered a major blow last week when they lost their FA Cup replay which denied them a trip to Stamford Bridge so confidence has to be low at Meadow Lane.
Doncaster have won four of their last five in the league with the one they didn’t win being against the leaders Plymouth which we will let them off as there is a great deal of difference between Plymouth and Notts County. Doncaster rarely lack for confidence but they should have plenty of it going into this one and I expect them to win the game.
