After a pretty one sided Test series, predictably so some would say, South Africa and Sri Lanka do battle in a three match T20 series which gets underway on Friday. South Africa will be looking to assert some dominance in this format of the game while Sri Lanka will be out to show their worth in the 20 over environment too.
Schedule
1st T20: Jan 20 at Centurion
2nd T20: Jan 22 at Johannesburg
3rd T20: Jan 25 at Cape Town
South Africa
Much has changed in recent times for South Africa. They have had to cope with a spate of Kolpak signings leaving their system to head to county game and in this format of the sport they have a new captain for this series too in Ferhaan Behardien. It will be interesting to see how he captains the side and how they respond.
This is largely a second string South Africa squad which has been picked for this series. They have a lot of cricket coming up so the star men have all been given a rest which I guess highlights where the series is in their list of priorities.
Sri Lanka
Although it isn’t a much changed Sri Lanka side it will be interesting to see how they play in this series. One day cricket has always been their forte and they have the personnel to perform strongly in this format regardless of the conditions.
If they are going to get anything out of this series you woul think they are going to need their senior players to stand up and be counted. If that happens and one or two of the lesser known players announce themselves on the big stage then there could yet be something in this for Sri Lanka.
Betting
South Africa are widely expected to win the series and win it comfortably but with the squad they have picked I’m quite happy to just let them do that if they are good enough. If they are not then I’ve saved myself some money.
My bet for the series is going to come in the top Sri Lanka series batsman market where the captain Angelo Mathews looks to have a standout chance. He is a really classy act and he can lead his side from the front with the bat. We’ve seen Mathews score well in Asia, England and Australia and against this second string South Africa attack he can score well here too.
