FedEx St Jude Classic – DFS Fantasy Breakdown

Introduction

Here at kevshatsportsbets we’re not all about just trying to outwit the bookmakers. Like many we are huge sports fans too and as fans of many sports we recognise the emerging boom of fantasy sports. In the coming weeks and months we will aim to bring you fantasy players plenty of separate content to hopefully provide assistance in picking your teams. We will break down the St Jude Classic Golf Tournament as out first fantasy post.

We are delighted to announce DraftKings as our fantasy sports partner and all of our previews and all fantasy content will be delivered in line with the make up of their games and the various sports they provide games for.

We will begin the fantasy content with this week’s PGA Tour event – the St Jude Classic but in the near future and beyond look out for pieces on football (soccer), both golf tours, NFL and NCAAF on a regular basis.

Profile

As mentioned in our betting preview for this tournament this isn’t a strong field so it is hard to eliminate anyone by right but those who we feel will fare better in the tournament will be strong in the following departments:

  • Greens in Regulation
  • Putting
  • Par 3 Scoring

Star men

Our star men section this week consists of those players who cost $8,000 and above which is a pretty select group but of course this isn’t the strongest field.

PICK – Harris English $9900

English is a former champion around here who has a scoring average less than 69 for his last 10 rounds at TPC Southwind. He arrives at a familiar track with good form behind him having finished second at Colonial last time out and among many statistics which attract our attention is his 12th in strokes gained putting. There isn’t many weaknesses in English’s game so we like him from the top pile this week.

PICK – Colt Knost $9700

Knost is our main pick in our betting preview this week and is everything we are looking for with a 28th placed ranking in strokes gained putting and 11th in proximity to the pin. This form horse has been contending in bigger and better fields than this in recent times and offers value this week.

AVOID – Ryan Palmer $10800

Palmer has a good record around here with a couple of top fives but they came three and four years ago and we don’t think he is as good now as he was then. Admittedly he comes in here in good form after a T3 at Colonial but that was a home game. This isn’t. Doesn’t sit in the top 30 in any key statistic this week. Easy one to avoid at the price.

AVOID – Russell Henley $8500

In theory he should be a fit around here but he isn’t and looks nothing like the player of a year or two ago. Doesn’t have a top 30 finish in any of his last five starts and has missed the cut three times in that run. At his best the putter is red hot but right now it is cold. Don’t chase form let it come to you and there is no form here.

Mid-range Players

This section for us this week are those players who cost $6500-$8000. It is a further sign of the lack of quality in the field that this section contains a number of players.

PICK – Jamie Donaldson $7800

It has been a quiet 2016 in a lot of ways for the Welshman but he has been playing catch up since the beginning of the year where a hand injury kept him out of competition. Donaldson is 3rd on Tour in strokes gained putting and in the top 15 in par 3 scoring. With no need to belt it miles this week the 2014 Ryder Cup hero looks a safe pick.

PICK – David Toms $7600

Twice a champion here who has made the cut in 18 out of 24 starts at TPC Southwind. He has converted seven of those 18 cuts made into top 10s so he’ll be feeling good about this place right now. Toms is sixth in proximity to the pin and solid with the short stick and has the comfort on this course to provide good value for a modest price.

PICK – Tim Wilkinson $7200

The statistical pick this week for sure. The Kiwi might struggle to put four rounds together but that is why we’re getting him at $7200 rather than $9200. 11th in strokes gained putting, eighth in proximity to the pin and fourth in par 3 scoring he has all that is needed to be in the mix around this golf course. An obvious pick at a low looking price.

PICK – Camilo Villegas $6900

Every team needs a trier right? The Colombian is certainly that. When he’s going well he makes a lot of birdies and they come in batches so he is perfect for fantasy purposes. Camilo has been here 10 times and has secured seven top 20 finishes in that time including his last three appearances. A solid horse for a course selection.

AVOID – Jason Bohn $7300

Started the season great but has understandably hit the skids since his heart attack. It is great to see him back in competition but as you would expect he has been quite cautious since his return. At this price it would be crazy to go near him this week.

AVOID – Luke List $6600

Ranks nowhere in the key statistics this week and much better suited on courses where he can let himself go and belt it out there. That’s not here and as such he’s not for us.

Bottom End Players

This section is for those who cost less than $6500 which is still a fair percentage of the field.

PICK – Brendon de Jonge $6400

The Zimbabwean just about gets in this section and we think he can contribute to any team at this price. Not in the greatest form by any means but someone who can burn up the shorter courses such as this one. He’s cheap enough to compliment the big names.

PICK – Justin Leonard $6300

Another twice champion around here who sits in a tie for eighth in proximity to the hole on Tour this year. He’ll get chances to make birdie and is cheap enough to include in the hope he converts a significant number of them.

PICK – Peter Malnati $5400

Not very often we can get a tournament winner on the season this cheap especially in a field this weak. It is a sign of the missed cuts in recent weeks why he is so cheap but he has performed well around here in the past and there were encouraging signs despite the missed cuts in the last two tournaments. Malnati has family ties in Memphis so won’t lack for support and among the cheapest in the field he can complement some big names with a solid week given the comfort he’ll enjoy.

AVOID – Stewart Cink $6100

Cink is 6/7 around here with a T5 in 2004 but this isn’t a fade of on course reasons it is a fade of everything that is going on off the course where his wife has been ill. Sometimes golf isn’t important and his focus is likely to be elsewhere. Always the danger of a WD if things take a turn away from the course too.

AVOID – Steven Bowditch $6000

Obvious fade. Eight missed cuts in 11 tournaments and two near enough no shows in the three events he has made the weekend. No form whatsoever so we’re not interested.
