There are two more matches in the Super League on Saturday as the season begins to head towards the halfway stage. After three away wins on a surprising night on Friday the home sides will be looking to restore parity on Saturday.
Both the matches on Saturday are live in front of the TV cameras which in theory gives us plenty of betting opportunities heading into the two fixtures.
Wakefield vs Salford
Wakefield went into Easter wondering where their next win was going to come from and then hey presto like London buses two arrived in the space of three days but before we get carried away by the Wildcats’ upturn in form we should remember they only beat two struggling sides in Huddersfield and Leeds.
Salford were turned over by the Catalans on Good Friday but they bounced back by crossing the Pennines to defeat Huddersfield on Easter Monday and they will be looking for back to back victories in Yorkshire here.
You wonder if Wakefield’s squad is big enough to cope with the demands of three matches in nine days and if it isn’t they could be in for a few issues here. Salford might not be the best side in the competition but they are going along quite nicely away from home and the one thing the Doctor has done there is invest in numbers and depth.
Fitness could be a real issues in this match and you’ve got to think that Salford will have that on their side going into this one. They have a good recent record over the Wildcats and I expect the Red Devils to get the job done here and done with a bit to spare.
Catalans vs Widnes
Straight after that first game the in form Catalans Dragons host a Widnes side who have hit their first mini slump of the season. Widnes went into Easter right in the mix in the table but back to back defeats have seen them slide to third in the table and in need of a win just to get back on track.
Catalans have won five of their last six matches and after a sticky start to the season they look to be in real flow now. Many touted them for a place in the top four in the table at the end of the season and a win here would move them into that position this early in the piece.
Widnes’ slump has come with Kevin Brown out of the side and he remains sidelined here which isn’t going to help their cause. Catalans can be quite a force to stop when they are on home soil but 14pts is quite a bit to cover against a side who can score points even without Kevin Brown in the side.
At this time of year I’m not sure I want to be backing sides to cover large handicaps. The aim for any team is just winning. On the other side I’m not sure I can be having Widnes on my side so I’ll sit the second half of this double header out.
