There are three matches in the Super League on Friday night, each potentially with big implications at either end of the table. We have a televised match which comes from Hull and then two matches away from the cameras to go at. As ever we’ll begin the preview with the TV match.
Hull FC vs St Helens
The surprise package of last season meet the seasoned campaigners in front of the cameras as Hull FC take on St Helens and you would have to say this is a battle of two sides who look to be in different spirits heading into the match.
Hull FC have picked up two wins already this season which includes an emphatic win over Huddersfield last weekend while St Helens have lost their last two matches after a hard fought win over Leeds in the opening round of the season.
There is a direct form line through Wakefield for these two sides. Hull FC won at Wakefield in the opening week of the season while St Helens lost to them last week. The issue I have with St Helens is their lack of potency and creativity in attack and they will need much more than they’ve shown to open up this Hull FC defence.
Hull FC have a superb half back pairing in Albert Kelly and Marc Sneyd and they can create enough for the home side to run out big winners here.
Leeds Rhinos vs Catalans Dragons
It has been a start to the campaign to forget for Leeds and things hit a real low last week when they were battered out of sight by the Castleford Tigers. They now take on an unbeaten Catalans Dragons side who should be full of confidence heading into the match.
Leeds have big issues. Until last week we knew their attack was struggling but their defence was keeping them competitive but that was exposed to the extent that you sense big questions need to be asked now. Catalans have no such worries. They are playing some good stuff and should arrive in Leeds full of confidence.
Catalans have won their last three against Leeds and I think on what we’ve seen so far this season they should be favoured to make it four wins in a row and exhance their position in the table.
Leigh Centurions vs Huddersfield Giants
Two sides looking to recover from a couple of savage beatings last week collide at the Leigh Sports Village when the Leigh Centurions host the Huddersfield Giants. Leigh were nilled at Wigan last week while the Giants were beaten out of sight by Hull FC so confidence in both sides will be under question.
Leigh go into the match as the favourites to win which with home advantage is fair enough but I’ve not reached the time yet where I can trust them at odds on. That said I’m no Huddersfield fan either so the obvious choice is to leave this one alone.
