There are three matches in the Super League on Friday evening as the season continues at quite a lick. We saw the leaders St Helens demolish Salford on Thursday and now it is the turn of the chasing pack to respond to that.
Among the three matches on Friday night we have a Yorkshire derby which is the TV clash and then two sides going well facing two teams who need to pick up victories quickly if they are to avoid the qualifiers later in the season. We’ll begin with the TV match.
Castleford Tigers vs Wakefield Trinity
Castleford Tigers will look to continue their recent dominance over their local rivals Wakefield Trinity when the two sides meet at the Mend-A-Hose Jungle on Friday evening. Both sides go into the match off the back of defeats last week and will be eager to avoid another one here.
Castleford were edged out by Wigan Warriors last week and there is no great shame in that. Wakefield were walloped by Salford and we saw last night that the form of that defeat is not exactly inspiring. In fact, Wakefield have lost six of their last seven matches which isn’t ideal.
Team news doesn’t favour Wakefield in this match either. Castleford will have Junior Moors and Jesse Sene-Lafao back while Wakefield are without two huge players in Danny Kirmond and Scott Grix. Castleford have a decent record over Wakefield in recent times and I don’t see that changing here.
Warrington Wolves vs Huddersfield Giants
Two sides who are going in opposite directions in this campaign meet at the Halliwell Jones Stadium when the Warrington Wolves host the Huddersfield Giants in a match the home side are emphatic favourites for.
That is no surprise based on recent weeks. The Wolves look to be finding a groove while Huddersfield have looked wretched. The Giants are shipping more than 30pts a match on average this season and you simply don’t win many matches with that record. With that in mind Warrington being asked to cover more than 20pts in this match. That is fair but I’m always reluctant to take sides to cover big handicaps especially with the foul weather going up and down the country. I’ll sit this out.

Widnes Vikings vs Wigan Warriors
Two more sides at opposite ends of the table meet in the other match on Friday evening when the Widnes Vikings host the Wigan Warriors. Wigan are the closest pursuers to St Helens this season and a win here will keep up that challenge. Only Huddersfield and Catalans have won fewer matches then Widnes which is not a positive statistic.
To be fair to Widnes they have been competitive in their 11 matches this season. Although they have lost five more matches than they have won their point difference is only -58 which shows they have lost a couple of close matches. Their trouble here is Wigan look very strong and ready to kick on. The handicap looks about right here so I’ll sit this one out too.
