Super League XXIII Magic Weekend – Hull KR vs Hull FC Betting Preview

The final match of the Magic Weekend in the Super League is one of the oldest derby matches in the sport when Hull KR and Hull FC collide at St James’ Park in a match where more than the two points are at stake.

It is Hull FC who currently hold the bragging rights after their Good Friday win at Craven Park and Hull KR will be eager to get their rivals back not just for that local pride but also because they need Super League points.

Hull KR

Hull KR saw a poor run of form ended when they went to Oldham and won in the Challenge Cup a few weeks ago but they have now lost their last three in all competitions and are only off the bottom of the pile in the Super League due to their point difference being better than the Catalans Dragons which isn’t saying a huge amount.

Generally when sides are down the bottom the amount of points they ship is the issue and that definitely is the case with Hull KR. They are averaging more than 25pts a game against them which is not ideal but on the flip side they have scored a few points so when they get near the opposing try line they can be potent.

Hull FC

The Challenge Cup holders kept their title defence alive with a spicy win against Featherstone last weekend but they have paid the price for that in terms of personnel as they have some big players out for this match. Taking on the derby in adversity is nothing new to them this season though as they won at Craven Park after having a man sent off inside the first 10 minutes.

Hull FC always have a pack that is full of brute and movement and I’m sure whichever combination gets out onto the park their back line will get the platform it needs to perform, especially on this expansive playing surface. Hull’s only defeat in their last five matches was a narrow one in France so they’re in decent enough form.

Team News

Both sides are missing a whole host of players for this match. Matty Marsh, Owen Harrison, Robbie Mulhern and of course Danny Maguire miss out for Hull KR among others. Ben Kavanagh and Chris Clarkson return from injury though.

Hull FC are missing almost their entire back line with Albert Kelly, Marc Sneyd, Fetuli Talanoa, Carlos Tuimavave and Bureta Faraimo are all out. The situation is so bad that Kirk Yeaman has had to come out of retirement to play here.

Betting

It is hard to judge what we are going to see in this match given the amount of players that both sides have out injured or suspended but I often think that when sides are disrupted due to personnel changes it is their defence that struggles and so I’m willing to wager we might see a few points here.

I guess given the amount of players both sides are missing their expectations will be low for this match which should allow the men who play to do so with a little more freedom with a readymade excuse waiting for them should they fail to win. That might see the ball given a little more air than normal and with that in mind we might well see the points total going beyond 42.5.
