Super League XXIII – Thursday 1st February Matches Betting Preview

The 2018 season of Super League begins with two matches in the elite competition on Thursday night as another year of top quality rugby league gets up and running. We are all set for a thrilling season and the opening night card should kick things into life nicely.

Among the two matches we have one live in front of the TV cameras while I’m sure we will get updates on the other one during the coverage. If we don’t there are many other ways to keep in the loop with events. We’ll kick the preview off with the TV game.

Warrington Wolves vs Leeds Rhinos

The first televised offering of the new season sees last season’s underachievers Warrington Wolves hosting the champions Leeds Rhinos who begin their title defence at the Halliwell Jones Stadium.

There have been changes to both sides during the close season as you would expect and as such it might take them a game or two to settle in and allow their plans to come to the fore. To add to the mix Warrington have a new coach here so their style might change and that might take a match or two to bear fruit.

All that taken into account I fancy the Leeds Rhinos could be good value in this one but it is a little early in the season to predict so the best bet could be under 38.5pts. It would be natural at this stage of the season and on a cold night for attacking rhythm to go missing and both sides are strong defensively. With Warrington having an Australian coach you would think they will play for position and be strong at the back. Points might be hard to come by here.

Hull FC vs Huddersfield Giants

The other match on Thursday night, the one away from the spotlight of the TV cameras sees the Challenge Cup winners Hull FC taking on the Huddersfield Giants in a match between two sides who might be underrated this term.

In truth we won’t know if they are underrated until a little later in the season but both sides have lost some players they would have liked to have kept in the close season and as such there may be a bedding in process that needs to be undertaken for the new players.

That makes betting on this match quite difficult. Both sides will be different from last season and in truth the handicap line which gives the Giants eight points looks about right so the best thing to do is to sit this one out.
