Super League XXIV – Saturday 18th May Matches Betting Preview

The final three matches in the latest round of the Super League takes place on Saturday afternoon, with the competition entering new ground as the Challenge Cup champions Catalans Dragons host the Super League winners Wigan Warriors at the Nou Camp in Barcelona.

That is one of the matches of the card on Saturday, and understandably gets the televised attention, but there are two others which should entertain those who follow them on the final day of action before the Magic Weekend. As ever we’ll begin the preview with the TV game.

Catalans Dragons vs Wigan Warriors

The vast surrounding of the Nou Camp, so often used to being the stage for Lionel Messi to deliver his art, will be the stage for the two major trophy winners from last season to battle it out when the Catalans Dragons host the Wigan Warriors.

The Dragons are quietly going about a decent enough season while Wigan are not having the campaign they would have expected but with a couple of former Warriors on the opposition side here you wouldn’t think they will struggle to get up for the match, especially in these surroundings. Catalans are usually relentless at home so it will be interesting to see if they lose anything but playing this one at a near to neutral venue.

I’m actually a little surprised that bookmakers are struggling to split the two. I have Catalans as the favourites not just because they are going through a better season but also because they rested the majority of their starters in the cup last week while Wigan slogged it out against Warrington on Sunday. That freshness could give Catalans the edge they need in this one.

London Broncos vs Wakefield Trinity

London Broncos will be looking to end a nasty slump when they host Wakefield Trinity down in the capital and they might not have a better chance of doing it. I say that because they had their feet up last week while the Trinity were having to do battle in the Challenge Cup.

London started the season relatively competitively but have found the going a little tough in recent times while Wakefield have gone from strength to strength and are pushing for a place in the play-offs come the end of the campaign. Although London are getting Wakefield at the right time, I still expect the visitors to win here but an 8-10pt handicap doesn’t have a huge margin for error and feels about right so I’ll sit this one out.

Warrington Wolves vs Hull FC

Two sides who had big battles in the cup last week meet at the Halliwell Jones Stadium where Warrington Wolves will look to move back within four points of St Helens at the top of the table when they host Hull FC who could go third with a win and with other results going their way.

Hull FC when they win tend to do so by a tight margin but when they are beaten they can get heavily exposed so they are not necessarily the easiest team in the world to bet on. I just wonder what Warrington will have in the tank after that fine win over Wigan in the cup last week. I’d rather watch this one rather than bet on it especially with the Wolves having a big game against Wigan at the Magic Weekend next week.
