We have just the one match in the Super League on Friday night and it comes from Headingley where the Leeds Rhinos and the Warrington Wolves square off in a match where both teams have the chance to show their credentials.
Leeds have actually begun the season quite positively despite their humbling at the hands of Hull FC on the opening week of the campaign, while Warrington are once again beginning to stumble and offer up inconsistency.
Leeds Rhinos
It has been a rebuilding couple of campaigns for the Leeds Rhinos but they will be eyeing up a spot in the play-offs this season, and two wins from their opening three matches suggest they might well be challengers for it. Doubters will be quick to point out that two of the wins came against Hull KR and Salford, neither of whom have set the world alight so far this term. Indeed their only tough game on paper was against Hull FC and they were well beaten that day.
One criticism that can be labelled at the Rhinos is that their pack doesn’t contain the beef of those that some of the top teams have, something they have looked to rectify this week. What they do have though is a skilful half-back combination and a back line who are no strangers to the try line and that can be significant. We shouldn’t forget home advantage either and they’ll look to use that to the full.
Warrington Wolves
To be fair to the Warrington Wolves, they put up a creditable showing with 12 men against Wigan Warriors in the opening week of the season then took the champions St Helens apart in their second game and looked like they were going to be the real deal this term. It is the two matches that have followed those which would be more of a concern to the Wire faithful. That is a loss at Wakefield and an unconvincing win against the Toronto Wolfpack.
The Wolves needed a dominant first month of the Super League campaign to banish the memories of the way last term ended, but they haven’t really got it. Injuries haven’t helped them it has to be said, but there are growing doubts over whether Steve Price is the man for the job over the long course, and in truth his players aren’t really helping to convince that he is. They seem to make the same mistakes all the time.
Team News
Leeds Rhinos have taken England international Joe Greenwood on loan from the Wigan Warriors and he goes straight into the squad for this match. Rhyse Martin also returns so the Rhinos pack should be much stronger.
Warrington Wolves have their captain Chris Hill available for the first time since the opening night of the campaign, after he has completed the three-match ban he picked up for his red card in that game. He comes in for Matty Ashton who is out with injury.
Betting
Warrington Wolves are beginning to get one or two too many injuries for my liking at the present time, and I’m never the most convinced about them on the road either. Leeds Rhinos look to be building up a nice head of steam and to be fair at home they look like a bit of value to me. You can argue about what they have beaten in recent times but the fact is they have beaten those teams and you can’t slam a team for winning.
I don’t think this one will be won easily by either team but Leeds look to be making strides forward and I always like to be on the team on the up, especially at odds against. Leeds look to have added two quality weapons to their forward pack, which could be significant here and I think that can get them over the line. I’ll take the home side at odds against as a value play in this one.
