The opening round of matches in the Super League concludes with a double header of action from Headingley on Sunday as the four teams yet to get their season up and running do so on what should be a great day of action.
Four teams with lofty reputations and an eye on the big prize at the end of the season form the schedule at Headingley and that means we could gauge an early indicator over who will produce what this term.
Toronto Wolfpack vs Castleford Tigers (14.30)
The opening match of the afternoon sees the Toronto Wolfpack making their Super League debut when they play host to the Castleford Tigers, albeit nowhere near their Canadian base due to the logistical challenge that faces the competition.
Castleford have been regular visitors to the play-offs in recent times, with their regular season record as good as that of anyone over the last three terms, but there is a feeling they could fade a little this season, so they have an immediate chance to prove their doubters wrong. All eyes will be on the Wolfpack here though to see if their marquee signing Sonny Bill Williams can inspire a huge campaign out of them. My gut feel is that the six points the Wolfpack are receiving is slightly too many but with question marks over both teams I would rather watch this one and assess it instead of bet on it.
Leeds Rhinos vs Hull FC (16.45)
The second match of the two sees two Super League stalwarts battling it out as Leeds Rhinos look to get what is an important season for them underway when they take on a Hull FC side for whom a lot of judges are expecting big things this term.
The Rhinos have been in the doldrums for a couple of seasons so they will want to lay a marker down and give themselves something to build on here but that is not going to be easy against a Hull FC side who look a physically daunting challenge to any side in the competition. The question mark over Lee Radford’s men here is whether they will have gelled this quickly but if they have they could be very tough to beat. Their forwards are the envy of most in the league and their back line isn’t too shabby either. Leeds still have a big reputation with bookmakers but it is a while since they lived up to that. They’re not no hopers here but if Hull FC play to anything like their potential they should win this.
