After one of the most epic days of rugby league the Super League as ever seen on Saturday, the second day of the Magic Weekend has a lot of live up to as it kicks off with Huddersfield Giants taking on Wakefield Trinity.
This first match sees two teams who are only playing for pride battling it out but we saw on Saturday that the stage is likely to inspire both so while this might not look the best game on paper, it could easily deliver the goods.
Where to watch
Like the three matches on Saturday, this match will be shown live and in full on the Sky Sports Arena channel. The build-up begins at 12.55pm with the match due to kick off at 1pm or soon after.
Huddersfield Giants
There was a lot expected of the Huddersfield Giants heading into this season after they recruited Ian Watson as their head coach but it soon became obvious that he wasn’t going to be a quick fix sort of recruit. Even so, you’d have liked to have seem plenty more from the Giants this term than we have done. It might be ok if there were obvious signs of progress under him, but despite the win over Hull KR on Monday, you’d be hard pushed to say there has been.
Prior to that win over Rovers on Monday night, the Giants had lost three matches in a row. They lost to the Salford Red Devils which doesn’t look the best result after Saturday. The other defeats were to the Leeds Rhinos and Warrington Wolves, which while understandable were disappointing. The big problem they are having is scoring points so it might be significant that they put 40 of them up on Hull KR on Monday. They will be looking to build on that.
Wakefield Trinity
It was a truly terrible first three quarters of the season for the Wakefield Trinity outfit but since they parted ways with Chris Chester they have come alive and suddenly look like a perfectly competent outfit. They head into this match with three wins from their last four matches including one over the Leeds Rhinos on Monday, and although they are not playing for anything in terms of competitiveness this season, you get the impression they are playing for next term whether at Wakefield or elsewhere.
Wakefield deserve a lot of credit for their recent form because it can be hard to motivate within when there is no real goal to aim at. Their wins have all been deserved and they have come against competent opposition. They are doing it without a couple of their better players as well which is another positive for them. They can approach the Magic Weekend with nothing to lose but a couple of spots in the table to gain.

Team News
Huddersfield Giants coach Ian Watson has named a similar squad to the ones he has been utilising in recent matches. That means that once again there is no Aidan Sezer so Will Pryce will continue to have the chance to shine.
Wakefield Trinity have also named the same squad which they picked from for the win over the Leeds Rhinos in the previous game. Tom Johnstone came through that match fine so the Trinity are at full strength.
Betting
There has been a lot of hype about the young halves of the Huddersfield Giants side but in terms of results the team haven’t really benefited from the talent they have at their disposal. This is a big stage for a couple of youngsters to perform on as well and that might be significant when we look back on this one. That makes me think that the best bet in this match is actually for the Wakefield Trinity to win it at odds against.
They carry the better form into this match with them having won three of their last four matches and although the Giants got a win to their name on Monday, they might just have caught an injury hit Hull KR side at the right time. There was none of that as far as Wakefield are concerned and with all their senior and key players in the side, and with them rejuvenated under Willie Poching, I think there is enough in the Trinity price to merit a bet here.
