Super League XXVI Magic Weekend – Leigh Centurions vs Hull KR Tips, TV and Betting Preview

The Magic Weekend in the Super League concludes with the sixth match of the round on Sunday afternoon when rock bottom Leigh Centurions take on Hull KR at a sun drenched St James’ Park to conclude the showpiece occasion.

This is a much bigger match for the Yorkshire outfit than their opponents with Rovers probably needing to win out to make it through to the play-offs. Leigh will finish bottom whatever they do between now and the end of the season.

Where to watch

The match will be shown live on Sky Sports Arena as with all the other games. The build-up begins after the fallout from the second game has finished. It is a 5.30pm kick off.

Leigh Centurions

This has been a terrible campaign for the Leigh Centurions who have done absolutely nothing to justify being given a licence for the season. They have one win throughout the whole of it and if their relegation is confirmed they will depart the competition having made little to no impression on it. That could change slightly here if they can find a win on the big stage but when they end up reflecting on things they just haven’t been good enough.

That was highlighted in brutal fashion on Monday evening when the Catalans Dragons took them to the cleaners in a match where given where they were at half time, to only lose 64-0 felt like a good effort in the second period. Defensively the Centurions haven’t been good enough all season and although they give of their best when they have the ball in hand, the amount of defending they have to do has a negative effect on their attacking output.

Hull KR

This has been a promising season for Hull KR but where they were a few weeks ago there will probably be a bad aftertaste to it if they allow it to just fizzle out and fail to make the play-offs. Making the top six is never easy but they had put themselves in a good position to get there. Three defeats in their last three outings have dented those chances though and they simply have to win this match in order to keep the possibility of competing in knockout rugby alive.

The big problem for Rovers is that those three defeats all came to teams who were below them in the table at the time. Injuries have been a big factor in those losses but there is no getting away from how they have let a good opportunity fade away. They aren’t dead yet though but they are effectively playing knockout football between now and the rest of the season so they are going to need to have their defence at its best here.

Team News

Leigh Centurions aren’t exactly being helped by players who are absent for them either. Lewis Tierney, Blake Wallace, Ben Flower, Jamie Ellis, Tyrone McCarthy and Ben Reynolds are just some of the players who will miss this match for them.

Hull KR coach Tony Smith has made just the one change to his squad. George Lawler comes out of it with Will Dagger coming in. Dean Hadley will be an obvious miss for the Rovers as he is out injured for the rest of the season.

Betting

All the attention will be on Hull KR in this match as they chase the win which will keep their season alive. It would be a pretty poor show from them if they don’t get that victory but Hull KR rarely do things easily and actually face a slightly dangerous opponent in that the Leigh Centurions have a big stage to perform on and absolutely nothing to lose on it. That makes me wary of getting involved in handicaps and things like that.

I’m going to look at the points in this match because I expect a high scoring game. A lot of Hull KR matches are high scoring because of the way they like to promote the ball when they have it and Leigh games are obviously higher scoring than most because their defence isn’t good enough, an issue I only expect to be exaggerated by the wide open pitch at St James’ Park. Leigh have nothing to lose and Hull KR have to win so I think we’ll see the high scoring trend of the weekend continue in this final game. I like over 52.5 points here.
