Super League XXVII Magic Weekend – Huddersfield Giants vs Salford Red Devils Tips, TV and Betting Preview

The second day of the Super League Magic Weekend kicks off with a clash between two form sides who both have their eyes on a top six finish this season when the Huddersfield Giants take on the Salford Red Devils.

The Giants have been one of the teams of the season, especially on the big occasion, while the Red Devils are arguably the best team to watch in Super League so the Sunday opener promises great things for us.

Where to watch

The match will be shown live on the Sky Sports Arena channel with the build-up to this Sunday opener beginning at 12.30pm and kick off coming at 1pm.

Huddersfield Giants

The Giants will certainly be no strangers to playing on a big stage this season having played at Elland Road in the Challenge Cup semi-finals and then at Tottenham in the final of that competition. They performed more than credibly on both occasions even though they lost out in the final and that will give them plenty of confidence here. They are a relatively young side with the exuberance of wanting to show their skills on the big stage.

Huddersfield aren’t just one of the better teams in the league on the league table, they are high up on many statistics and relevant ones too in terms of completed sets, fewest errors and a few others which account for so much of the game. They might not be the most flashy because they are quite robotic in terms of their desire to finish sets and get kicks into corners, but what they might lack in flare they make up for in results.

Salford Red Devils

If the Huddersfield Giants are solid and safe the Salford Red Devils are the exact opposite. They play on the edge and are happy to take risks knowing the rewards are great if it comes off. If it doesn’t they leave themselves exposed but that is the charm and beauty of this side. You would imagine that this is just the sort of stage that the Salford excitement machine can rev up for particularly with the wide and expansive pitch.

The one thing which might hold Salford back a little here is after back-to-back wins they are now in a position to strike for the top six in the competition and that is a big thing. It will be a test of their mettle and how much they believe in the way they play to see whether they keep going to just edge on the side of caution a little more. One thing is for sure is they will be confident having piled up the points on Wakefield and then steamed past Warrington in their last two outings.

Team News

Huddersfield Giants will welcome half-back Theo Fages back after he has missed a period of time with injury. There is still no Ricky Leutele though but Toby King is firmly part of the squad and should have settled in now.

Salford Red Devils will welcome their captain Elijah Taylor back into the fold for this match. They remain without Morgan Escare so Ryan Brierley will line up at full-back. Kallum Watkins will continue to operate in the back row despite England coach Shane Wane using him at centre.

Betting

I think we are in for an entertaining opening to the second day of the Magic Weekend. Huddersfield Giants have sometimes been a little too meticulous in their play and forgotten to turn their dominance into points but that hasn’t been the case so much recently and I don’t think it is going to take an awful lot to break down this Salford Red Devils defence, especially on a wide pitch for a team who like to spread the play out for the likes of Tui Lolohea to exploit.

Just the way Salford Red Devils play leads to points being scored, either by them or at the other end when they commit too many men to their attacks and leave themselves exposed a little. Salford have a fit squad to choose from which is important because the likes of Brodie Croft and Marc Sneyd could cause havoc taking the ball to the line and creating mischief here. I’m expecting both teams to score a lot of points here on what will be perfect conditions for summer rugby. I like over 47.5 points in this one.
