Super League XXVIII – Friday 14th July Matches Tips, TV and Betting Preview

The latest round of matches in the Super League XXVIII season continues on Friday evening when three more fixtures take place on a night where the top six in the table could continue to take shape as we go into the final quarter of the regular campaign.

As it is a Friday we have a match on the TV to enjoy, one which could be defining in terms of who hosts a play-off match. The other two games go on alongside the live game so we should get regular updates of them. We’ll begin the preview with the TV match.

Wigan Warriors vs Warrington Wolves (20.00 – Sky Main Event & Sky Sports Arena)

The pick of the three matches on Friday evening is the one between the Wigan Warriors and the early pacesetters Warrington Wolves, who are in a slump that they need to get out of pretty soon if they are going to make the postseason.

Both teams go into this match off the back of defeats last week. Wigan were beaten in extra time at Wakefield which doesn’t look particularly great whereas Warrington lost at home to St Helens, form which wasn’t exactly backed up on Thursday evening when Saints were beaten at home. The concern with Warrington isn’t the loss last week, it is the fact that it is now six of the last seven matches they have lost and their attack continues to flounder. Prior to that surprise loss at Wakefield last week, Wigan had won their last three matches and were looking like they were getting into a bit of a groove but the thing with this team is when they look like they have cracked it they throw in a shocker of a performance. In truth, I can’t trust either team so I’m happy to leave this one alone although I would be with Wigan if I had to choose.

Huddersfield Giants vs Wakefield Trinity (19.45)

The first of the three matches to kick off on Friday evening comes from the John Smith’s Stadium where Huddersfield Giants will look to build on their surprise win over the Catalans Dragons last week when they host Wakefield Trinity in a Yorkshire derby.

Trinity took an age to get going this season but suddenly they have won three of their last four matches and there is now real hope that they can avoid finishing bottom. The latest win came against Wigan Warriors last week and they will make the short trip to Huddersfield high on confidence. We finally got to see what the real Huddersfield Giants look like last week, although it is fair to say that Catalans Dragons were missing a couple of key players and were very ordinary as a result of that. Nevertheless, it was a display and a result that the Giants needed and the hope within their fans is that they build on that and form a late push for the play-offs. Whether that happens remains to be seen but they are favourites to win this one and a few weeks ago we would probably have chanced the Giants but Wakefield look in better spirits now. Had this match been last week Wakefield probably would have been the play but that Huddersfield win in France moves the goalposts a little so the best way to play this might be to leave it alone.

Leeds Rhinos vs Hull KR (20.00)

The other match on Friday night comes from Headingley where the Leeds Rhinos meet Hull KR in a huge clash in the race for the top six with these two beginning the night as the two sides immediately below the play-off line.

The huge carrot being dangled for both teams here is that however comes out on top in the match will finish the night in the top six and will suddenly be close to controlling their own destiny across the final third of the season. That might well be the Rhinos because Hull KR look to be having more than one eye on their Challenge Cup semi-final next weekend, which given how big the match is for them is understandable. There will be a host of players missing for Hull KR here including Mikey Lewis, Jordan Abdull, Kane Linnett, Sauaso Sue, Corey Hall and Elliot Minchella and Jack Walker is a doubt against his former club too. That is likely to sway this one heavily in the favour of the Rhinos, particularly when you consider that they will have Blake Austin back from suspension and Justin Sangare returns from injury. The form book points to the Rhinos here with them having won their last three whereas Hull KR have lost six of their last seven in Super League and are creaking at the edges. Add in the missing personnel and the Leeds win should come by a sizable margin.

Back Leeds Rhinos (-16) to beat Hull KR for a 3/10 stake at 1.91 with William Hill
