T20 World Cup 2021 – West Indies Team Guide and Betting Preview

West Indies are the defending champions and the most successful team in the T20 World Cup. They will go in search of a third title having won the crown in 2012 and last time out in 2016. No other country has won this event more than once so if West Indies are the champions this year they will be the first team to successfully retain the title and put this generation of T20 experts in a whole world of their own.

Team Guide

There is no doubt that West Indies have been the best team of the last decade when it comes to T20 cricket. Their players dominate the franchise leagues and when they get together in this event they have blasted their way to two titles with their brilliant power hitting which has just been too much for teams to handle. Their titles have come on the relatively flat pitches in Sri Lanka and India though so it will be interesting to see if they can smash their way to success here.

You have to doubt whether they will be suited by these conditions with the bat but quite simply their power is such that you’d have to think someone will come off when needed. Where they shouldn’t be underestimated is with the ball where they have some clever spinners and a couple of seamers who take the pace off the ball to brilliant disguise. Dwayne Bravo has just won the IPL in these conditions with the Chennai Super Kings and this squad is so good the management feel they don’t need Sunil Narine. That is a statement if ever there was one.

Betting

I’ve already backed Roston Chase at a stupidly ridiculous price to be the top scorer in the tournament and I’ll play to see if he can deliver the goods for West Indies at a similarly daft price. I took Chase because he is the one in this side who doesn’t have the ego of having to smash bowlers out of the park and can play the role that West Indies will really need someone to play if they are going to be successful in this tournament.

His role is going to be similar to the one David Wiese has played for Namibia so successfully to date in that he’ll look to rebuild the innings and offer a senior play when the need arises but he showed in the CPL that he can smash it out of the park when he has the license to do that as well. There are plenty of big hitters in this West Indies side and they’ll all come off at some point I’m sure, but whether they come off multiple times is a different story. Chase might not catch the eye with strike rates and things but when West Indies bow out of this thing he could well be their leading scorer overall.
