T20 World Cup 2022 – New Zealand Team Guide and Betting Preview

New Zealand were beaten finalists in the T20 World Cup last year and they head to Australia looking to go one better this time around and finally get their hands on some white ball silverware having lost in three finals in the last seven years. New Zealand are never ones who are touted to win these tournaments but they rarely fail to show up in them. They aren’t among the fancied runners this year but you get the impression that will suit them fine.

Team Guide

New Zealand are one of the most consistent international teams in the world. They have been to the last two white ball finals and won the World Test Championship in between then. There is a feeling that their star might be beginning to dim a touch but this is the perfect stage for them to show that isn’t the case. This is definitely a squad that has aged together and while that brings experience, you never fully know when the shelf life will be reached.

New Zealand won’t need reminding that their record in Australia is absolutely terrible. They haven’t won a match of any kind in Australia since 2011 and that is something they are going to need to rectify if they are going to get their hands on this title. They look to have all the bases covered with the ball but on these huge Australian outfields you wonder if they have enough about them with the bat, especially if they pick up some injuries along the way.

Betting

There is a lot of competition in the top bowler market for New Zealand in this tournament but it isn’t helped with the unconfirmed status of Lockie Ferguson and Adam Milne. The latter did at least feature in the Tri-Series recently but if they get rotated along with Southee and Boult all of a sudden we have a competitive field which turns into a lottery. That makes me head to the batter market for a bet for New Zealand.

There are one or two unknowns in that department as well. We don’t know which one of Martin Guptill or Finn Allen will start the tournament as opener and we don’t know when Daryl Mitchell will be back from injury. We do know that Kane Williamson isn’t in the best form and I’m not convinced by Devon Conway in this format of the game. I actually think the 8/1 on Glenn Phillips to top score from number four is the way forward here. He has toured the franchise circuit for a while and can play the rebuild innings or the blitz one which is important batting at four. He is the leading run scorer for New Zealand in 2022 with 449 runs in 12 innings at an average of a shade under 50. If he gets close to those numbers here then he will go very close to top scoring.
