Tokyo 2020 Olympics – Other Sports Monday 2nd August Tips and Betting Preview

We head into the final week of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics on Monday and we do so with another bunch of sports being played out in the Japanese capital on a day where there are 22 gold medals up for grabs in the various arenas.

Some of the sport we’ve seen over the first nine days has been compelling, mesmerising, entertaining and exciting and if those days have been anything to go by we really shouldn’t expect any different on Monday.

Gold Medal Events

  • Artistic Gymnastics
  • Athletics
  • Badminton
  • Cycling
  • Equestrian
  • Sailing
  • Shooting
  • Weightlifting
  • Wrestling

Other Sports

With the swimming and the tennis over it is the turn of the track cycling to join athletics as the focal sports of the Games. The action begins inside the velodrome on Monday while there is also the semi-finals of the women’s football and the quarter finals of the women’s hockey events. The tournaments in the baseball, beach volleyball, handball, water polo and the volleyball all continue on another great looking day of action out in Tokyo.

Women’s Hockey

The four quarter finals take place on the one day in the women’s hockey on Monday as the knockout stages of the event begins. Netherlands and Australia completely dominated the pool phase of the competition and all eyes will be on them to see whether they can see off New Zealand and India respectively. The odds suggest they will. The last of the quarter finals sees Team GB continuing their title defence when they go up against Spain.

GB are the favourites to win the match even though they finished third in their pool while Spain finished second on theirs. GB finished behind the Netherlands and Germany, two of the better sides in the competition, but they only went down to those sides by the odd goal and were pretty comfortable in the three matches they did win. Spain got better the longer the pool phase went on but I wouldn’t say they impressed that much. Britain are the better side of the two here and you get the feeling that if they can make the most of the large number of penalty corners they win, someone will get a trouncing soon. On a day of short prices I think Team GB are one for the multiples.

Women’s Football

We are down to the semi-final stage of the women’s football on Monday so the four sides know that later in the week they will be battling it out for the medals. What we find out on Monday is who will be battling for which colour. The first semi-final sees the North American rivals battling it out when the world champions USA take on Canada while the second game will be between Sweden and Australia who meet for the second time in the tournament.

Earlier in the competition I took Sweden to cover a handicap against Australia and they won that match 4-2 and I’m expecting something similar in this semi-final. Sweden have been the team of the tournament for me and have cruised into this last four clash whereas Australia were a little fortunate to get the better of Team GB in the quarter final, needing a late equaliser and then having to survive a missed penalty in extra time before coming out on top. I think they need to find a fair bit to see off Sweden here and having to play an extra 30 minutes on Friday won’t have helped their cause. I don’t really want to be on handicaps in a semi-final but if you add Sweden to Team GB in the hockey you get a good looking double at an odds against price.
