The third round of the singles draws at the US Open begins on Friday where for the first time in the tournament the seeded players can face each other around the grounds at Flushing Meadows in New York.
The shocks in the tournament continued throughout the second round but one player who hasn’t departed yet is Serena Williams and she headlines another good looking day of action out in the Big Apple.
Arthur Ashe Stadium
There is a really good schedule on the Arthur Ashe Stadium on Friday and it begins with the 2012 champion Andy Murray opening up the show. He takes on the former Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini before two Americans take to the court to close out the day session when Coco Gauff meets Madison Keys in what looks a pearler of a match. The night session begins with the third leg of the Serena Williams evolution tour. Ajla Tomljanovic is the latest opponent looking to put the legend into retirement. The action on Ashe is closed out by the world number one Daniil Medvedev who will go up against Yibing Wu.
Louis Armstrong Stadium
Five singles matches take place on the Louis Armstrong Stadium on Friday across the day and the night. Opening up the day session is the Wimbledon finalist Ons Jabeur. She goes up against the big hitting Shelby Rogers in a real clash in styles. The men then take to the court for the second match when Tommy Paul looks to make the second week of his home Grand Slam when he faces off against the French Open finalist Casper Ruud. Alison Riske closes the day session when she meets Xiyu Wang. There is a cracking night session on this court which sees Bianca Andreescu taking on Carolina Garcia before Nick Kyrgios meets J.J. Wolf.
Grandstand
The Grandstand action on Friday actually begins with a men’s doubles match but when that is done and the singles play begins Veronika Kudermmetova will take on Dalma Galfi before the British interest turns to this court as Jack Draper looks to make the second week of a Slam for the first time. In his way is the Olympic silver medallist Karen Khachanov. The action on the Grandstand concludes with what could be an absolute belter as the Montreal champion Pablo Carreno Busta goes up against Alex de Minaur.
Court 17
There are three matches on Court 17 on Friday and such has been the amount of shocks we have had this week there isn’t a seed among them. The first player on show is Daniel Galan who accounted for Stefanos Tsitsipas in the first round. He takes on Alejandro Davidovich Fokina before Corentin Moutet faces off against Pedro Cachin. The other match is a women’s clash between Liudmila Samsonova and Aleksandra Krunic.

Men’s Betting
There isn’t a huge amount that I like in the men’s draw on Friday with the prices looking about right for most of the matches and the ones where the favourites are a little skinny I don’t really want to take them on with those opponents. If I was to take one on it would probably be Casper Ruud but Tommy Paul has gone to five sets in both of his matches so far and I wouldn’t think he has much left in the tank. We have to wait for the night session for my bet.
That comes in the match between Daniil Medvedev and Yibing Wu where I expect the Chinese qualifier to meet his match. Medvedev hasn’t sparkled in this tournament yet but he is doing more than enough to come through and has won both his matches in straight sets and been on court for just 4hr14 in total across those games. Wu had to go through qualifying and then it took him just 25 minutes less to take care of Nuno Borges in five last time out. That was the first time he has played five sets and when you add the other four matches he has played to reach this far in intense heat and humidity fatigue must surely set in. The games line for this one is 30.5 so even a routine 64 64 64 win for the Russian doesn’t go over that. I expect Medvedev to dominate at least one of the sets more than that though. He’s won two sets this week 62 and another 60 so the under looks safe here.
Women’s Betting
I’ll go with just the one in the women’s draw as well although after another two hours on court in the doubles on Thursday evening I’m tempted to oppose Serena Williams but Ajla Tomljanovic is going to have a raucous Friday night crowd to deal with and the whole show around Serena this week will take some coming to terms with. Instead I’ll get involved in a match which has another American player in it in the form of Shelby Rogers.
She takes on Ons Jabeur in a match I fancy the American to come out on top in. So far in this American summer she has registered wins over Bianca Andreescu, Maria Sakkari, Amanda Anisimova and ran both Daria Kasatkina and Aryna Sabalenka close in San Jose and Cincinnati. Jabeur hasn’t been quite so convincing. She arrived here with two wins from five matches on the hard courts since Wimbledon and although she has progressed through the draw she hasn’t dominated two opponents who don’t have a lot of weapons. Rogers does. She’s a clean hitter of the ball and we’re seeing those players come to the forefront this week. Rogers has good memories of this event having beaten Ash Barty in this round last year before running into Emma Raducanu in the next round who nobody was beating that week. On a big court with a home crowd to support her I like Rogers here.
