The semi-finals of the US Open get underway on Thursday evening when it is the turn of the four remaining women to take to the Arthur Ashe Stadium court in New York to determine which two will make it through to the final.
We have had a number of shock results over the fortnight so far but for all of that we have three of the top six seeds and one of the form players in the game right now through to the last four and they should ensure the quality of these games are very high.
Caroline Garcia vs Ons Jabeur
The opening semi-final of the US Open sees the champion in Cincinnati in Caroline Garcia going up against an Ons Jabeur who will be aiming to make a second straight Grand Slam final having reached the title match at Wimbledon.
Garcia has never been to a Grand Slam semi-final before and therefore never a final but equally she has never been in the form she has been in over the last three weeks either. Of all the four women who made it through to the semi-final, the display of the French woman in the quarter final was the best of them all. Jabeur was nothing like as convincing in her last eight clash so she will either need to raise her game dramatically here or hope that Garcia suffers from nerves and that the clean ball striking that she has possessed throughout the tournament lead to a few more unforced errors gifting her points. I don’t like Jabeur here I have to say. She might well win but the match is on the racquet of the Cincinnati champion here. Garcia is odds on though and this doesn’t feel like a night for odds on shots so I’ll leave this one alone.

Iga Swiatek vs Aryna Sabalenka
The second semi-final sees the world number one Iga Swiatek looking to reach a second Grand Slam final of the year when she meets Aryna Sabalenka who will be walking out onto the Arthur Ashe Stadium court on semi-final night for the second year in a row.
Sabalenka was edged out by Leylah Fernandez is a corker of a contest in the last four a year ago and the Belarusian will be looking to make up for that here. Swiatek has never been in the last four in New York and you would have to say she is a little fortunate to be in this semi-final because she hasn’t really played like she can at any stage in the tournament. Even in the quarter final Jessica Pegula wasn’t really at the races in a match which featured a ridiculous 12 breaks of serve. I think Swiatek is going to have to up it here. She might well do that but it can’t help that she only played on Wednesday night and has to go again here. Sabalenka was very impressive in beating Karolina Pliskova in the quarter final and if she plays like she did in that clash or in the semi-final here last year I think she beats a Swiatek who looks like she is waiting for someone to put her out of her misery.
