The third round of the US Open concludes on Saturday which means that at the end of the day we will know the line up for the last 16 in both singles draws of the final Grand Slam of the year at Flushing Meadows.
The New York crowds were treated to some excellent tennis on Friday which involved Novak Djokovic being on the brink before he came good. It would be foolish to expect any different over the course of Saturday.
Arthur Ashe Stadium
We have a brilliant schedule on the Arthur Ashe Stadium on Saturday which begins in the day session when Carlos Alcaraz continues his title defence. The world number one will go up against Dan Evans for a place in the second week of the tournament. When they are done the day session will conclude with the third seed Jessica Pegula taking on Elina Svitolina who has come alive again over the last couple of months.
It is the women who get the night session started as well when the first of the two matches sees the beaten finalist of a year ago, Ons Jabeur, looking to push towards a fourth Grand Slam final in 14 months when she takes on Marie Bouzkova. The action on Ashe concludes with the 2021 champion Daniil Medvedev on show. He goes up against Sebastian Baez who is on an extended winning streak and entitled to be a threat to the Russian.
Louis Armstrong Stadium
We still have five singles matches over on the Louis Armstrong Stadium, three in the day session and then two in the night one. We get underway with the Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka on show. She meets the French player Clara Burel before the home star Madison Keys takes to the court. It is a sign of how good the schedule is on Ashe that her match with Liudmila Samsonova is only able to be staged on the second court. The men conclude the day session when a potential cracker between the former winner Stan Wawrinka and dangerous dark horse Jannik Sinner takes place.
The men follow them to open up the night session too when Alexander Zverev looks to make it into the second week of the US Open once again. He will go up against Grigor Dimitrov who arrives into this match on the back of a very good win over Andy Murray last time out. The Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova will close out the action over on Armstrong when she meets the extremely competent Ekaterina Alexandrova.
Grandstand
Just the three matches take place on the Grandstand in of singles action and one of the four Brits on show over the course of the day opens up the play when Jack Draper has a golden chance of reaching the last 16 of a Grand Slam for the first time in his career. He meets the home wildcard Michael Mmoh. When they are done Andrey Rublev will look to make it into the second week when he meets Arthur Rinderknech. A doubles match follows them but when that is done the British number one Katie Boulter will look to reach the second week of a Grand Slam for the first time when she meets Payton Stearns.

Court 17
The majority of the remainder of singles action comes over on Court 17 where another three matches take place. They begin with the one women’s match on this court which sees Daria Kasatkina taking on one of the surprise packages of the event in Greet Minnen. Cameron Norrie will look to make it through to the second week of the US Open in the next match on court. The British number one will go up against Matteo Arnaldi. The third match on the court is a doubles match which should lead to the last one being played under the lights when the big serving Nicolas Jarry goes up against Alex de Minaur who is looking to continue an excellent summer so far.
Men’s Betting
There is only one bet that I like over the course of the day in the men’s draw and that comes in the night session where Alexander Zverev meets Grigor Dimitrov for the second time in this US hard court swing and the third time in 2023. So far their two meetings in 2023, the first at the French Open, and the second in Cincinnati a couple of weeks ago have yielded two very comfortable wins for the German and I’m expecting similar here too.
Zverev won 61 64 63 in Paris and 62 62 in Cincinnati so this just looks a bad matchup for the Bulgarian. Zverev has now won their last five meetings after Dimitrov won their opening encounter but those two beatings he has handed down to the Bulgarian feel significant to me and when you consider that Dimitrov was two sets down in the first round here there are question marks over him. Zverev dropped a set to Daniel Altmaier in the previous round but his big hitting game feels more suited to this event and I expect him to win no worse than 3-1.
Women’s Betting
I like two bets over in the women’s draw though with the first of those on Liudmila Samsonova to beat a Madison Keys who continues to flatter to deceive in Grand Slams. It seems that every time Keys comes up against someone who will challenge her at this level she gets beat and you would expect the Russian to do just that. Sometimes Keys can blast opponents away with her power but already this summer Samsonova has dispatched power hitters regularly. She beat Danielle Collins and Sorana Cirstea in Washington and on her way to the final in Montreal, Elena Rybakina and Aryna Sabalenka were among her victims, as was Belinda Bencic. Both meetings between these two have gone to a deciding set and the longer Samsonova is in this one the better I feel her chances will be. She looks a big price to me.
I also think the night session opener on Ashe will yield a good betting opportunity when Ons Jabeur takes on a Marie Bouzkova who I really like, especially in these faster conditions. These two met at Wimbledon last year and it went to a deciding set and that does tend to be the mantra of Jabeur in Grand Slams. Three of her six wins went to a decider at Wimbledon as did her win in Australia so you would imagine there will be periods of this one where Bouzkova gets her own way. Jabeur does usually find a way in those deciding sets though so I expect her to come through in the end. Bouzkova has wins over Caroline Garcia, Elise Mertens and Jessica Pegula this summer so she can take it to the big guns. This all feels like a lengthy match where over 21.5 games lands.
