US Open Tennis 2024 – Day 2 Tips and Betting Preview

The second day of the US Open sees the first round of the singles draws due to be completed across the many courts at Flushing Meadows as those who didn’t get their campaign underway in New York on Monday do so on Tuesday.

We saw both the defending champions on show across the schedule on Monday and on Tuesday it will be the turn of the two number one players in the world to take to the court and show us what they have for the fortnight ahead.

Arthur Ashe Stadium

Once again we have two matches in the day session and two more at night on the main court and it is all about the world number ones in the early part of Tuesday. The 2022 champion Iga Swiatek starts her campaign for a second US Open title when she goes up against Kamilla Rakhimova before the men’s top seed Jannik Sinner will look to put a controversial week behind him when he steps onto the court to take on the home player Mackenzie McDonald to round off the day session. The night session begins with the 2022 men’s winner Carlos Alcaraz on show. He meets Li Tu for a spot in the second round before two powerful Americans complete the schedule on the main court when Shelby Rogers takes on the Toronto champion Jessica Pegula.

Louis Armstrong Stadium

The typical three matches in the day session and two more in the night is in operation on the second court on Tuesday and we begin with Danielle Collins who will be starting the final Grand Slam of her career when she meets Caroline Dolehide. When they are done arguably the match of the first round will be on the court when Jelena Ostapenko goes up against the twice former champion here in Naomi Osaka. Daniil Medvedev has done everything but win the title in New York and he’ll begin his quest to finally get his hands on the trophy when he closes out the day session against Dusan Lajovic. There is an argument for the night session on Armstrong being better than the one on Ashe as it begins with the past winner Bianca Andreescu facing the French Open and Wimbledon finalist Jasmine Paolini before Tommy Paul looks to get a win on home soil when he faces the Winston Salem winner Lorenzo Sonego.

Grandstand

Four matches are on the schedule over on the Grandstand court on Tuesday with the action beginning with the Greek star Stefanos Tsitsipas looking for a spot in round two at the expense of Thanasi Kokkinakis. Elena Rybakina will then get her US Open campaign underway when she takes on Destanee Aiava. Seb Korda is a home player who should be motivated by the crowd and the environment and he starts his tournament in the third match of the day when he meets Corentin Moutet. The closer on this court sees two Grand Slam winners on show when the 2019 champion here, Emma Raducanu, faces the former Australian Open winner Sofia Kenin in a blockbuster first round clash.

Court 17

Not for the first time this week we have a decent schedule over on Court 17 on Tuesday as well with Katie Boulter, the British number one, leading off the order of play. She will go up against Aliaksandra Sasnovich for a place in the second round before Caroline Wozniacki looks to make it through at the expense of Nao Hibino. Alex de Minaur returns from the injury which stopped him competing in a Wimbledon quarter final earlier in the year in the third match on this court. Marcos Giron will look to use the home crowd to his advantage against him. The closer on Court 17 sees the former winner Stan Wawrinka going up against Mattia Bellucci.

Best of the Rest

As was the case on Monday, there is a full schedule of play on all courts on Tuesday so there are plenty of big names dotted around the grounds throughout the day. Four seeds will be on show on Court 5 where Felix Auger-Aliassime, Jack Draper, Anna Kalinskaya and Leylah Fernandez all take to the court. Elsewhere those with ground passes or access to the many streams will be able to see the likes of Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Matteo Arnaldi, Liudmila Samsonova, Karen Khachanov, Hubert Hurkacz, Caroline Garcia and Beatriz Haddad Maia among plenty of others.

Men’s Betting

There are two bets that I like over the course of the day in the men’s draw with the first of those coming in the form of Marcos Giron to beat Alex de Minaur. If this match was earlier in the year then I would have been extremely keen on the Australian but this is his first match since Wimbledon because of injury so he might need some time to find his timing and things. Since de Minaur picked up that injury at Wimbledon, Giron has won the title at Newport and while he hasn’t won a match since then, he went down to Felix Auger-Aliassime on the clay at the Olympics. That was acceptable but he would have been disappointed to have lost the two hard court matches he has played. Giron has wins over Frances Tiafoe and a couple of Adrian Mannarino so he can handle himself on the hard courts. His loss to Sebastian Baez was in a deciding set tiebreak which could have gone the other way but I think the American is overpriced here.

The other bet that I like is for Jaume Munar to beat Gabriel Diallo. Diallo comes in here with a lot of hard court wins under his belt on the Challenger level and the three victories at the qualifiers for this competition but he has played a fair amount of tennis recently. He was on court for over seven hours last week and we saw that catch up with a couple of players who came through the qualifying event and started well on Monday only to drop off the longer the match went on. Munar hasn’t really had the best hard court swing in the world but he had a win over Lorenzo Sonego in qualifying for Cincinnati and that doesn’t look a bad result now. Losses to Jack Draper and David Goffin in deciding sets aren’t terrible results. The key thing is that Maune is fresh and while these courts are quick there was a feeling that the outside ones were not overly fast. Maune generally operates at a higher level to Diallo and his record would be much better if he didn’t come out on the wrong side of a number of deciders this season. I think there is enough in the even money on the Spaniard to come through here.

Women’s Betting

There are a couple of bets that I like in the women’s draw as well with the first of those coming in the form of Marie Bouzkova who I think will have a fair bit in hand when she takes on Eva Lys, the qualifier who is on a decent run but I think that ends here. Lys won three matches at qualifying but the highest ranked player she played on that run was 144 and she goes seriously up in grade here given that Bouzkova is ranked 45 in the world. The Czech started this hard court swing with a run to the Washington final where she beat Aryna Sabalenka on her way to defeat to a rejuvenated Paula Badosa. Since then she has lost in her first match in Toronto and Cincinnati but both were in deciding sets which could have gone either way. I think we’ll see the gulf in class between these two and fancy Bouzkova to cover a 3.5 game handicap.

The other bet comes in the form of the game line in the match between Beatriz Haddad Maia and Elina Avanesyan where we can get a 21.5 line. The Brazilian seems to get involved in some humdinger matches out of nowhere and generally when she wins it is pushing three hours and there are three tight sets and things. Avanesyan isn’t on that level just yet but she certainly knows how to go to a third set. Seven of her last 15 matches on a hard court has gone the distance and you would have to think that in these conditions it isn’t going to take much for this one to go the same way. She has gone the distance with Marta Kostyuk, Ons Jabeur and Jelena Ostapenko on a hard court this year and this could well be another. A 21.5 game line throws up enough scores for the over to land in a straight sets match too though so I like being on the over here.
