Wimbledon 2019 – Day 1 Tips and Betting Preview

The opening day of the 2019 Wimbledon tournament takes place on the grass courts at SW19 on Monday and as ever we have a busy day to get the competition underway with a host of star names getting their campaigns started.

As is tradition, we know that defending men’s champion Novak Djokovic will open up the action on Centre Court but there is a lot to enjoy across all of the courts on what should be a wonderful day of tennis in London.

Centre Court

Novak Djokovic begins his title defence in the first of the three matches on the iconic show court on Monday when he takes on the capable German player Philipp Kohlschreiber before the current US Open and Australian Open champion Naomi Osaka starts out on her quest for a third Grand Slam title when she takes on Yulia Putintseva. The British crowds get the chance to get behind their number one player in the final match on Centre Court when Kyle Edmund goes up against Jaume Munar.

Court 1

The cast list on Court 1 is decent enough on Monday afternoon as well and it is set on its way by former world number one Simona Halep. She goes up against Aliaksandra Sasnovich before the German ace Alexander Zverev is on court against a man who has had success at Wimbledon before in Jiri Vesely. The much anticipated clash between the eldest woman in the draw, Venus Williams, and the youngest one, Coco Gauff rounds off what looks like being an entertaining day on the modernised Court 1.

Court 2

There are four matches on what is known as the graveyard court and in terms of star names and potential competitive tussles this is the place to be watching. Stan Wawrinka begins the competition on this court when he takes on Ruben Bemelmans before the Eastbourne champion Karolina Pliskova gets her quest for a maiden Grand Slam underway when she takes on Lin Zhu from China. The highly-rated Stefanos Tsitsipas offers up a star attraction in the third match on court when he faces the Eastbourne semi-finalist Thomas Fabbiano before the action concludes with the former Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki facing the Spanish player Sara Sorribes Tormo.

Court 3

The beaten finalist of 12 months ago gets the honour of starting up on the remaining show court when Kevin Anderson faces Andy Murray’s doubles partner Pierre-Hugues Herbert for a place in the second round. Aryna Sabalenka is them on court in a tasty tussle against Magdalena Rybarikova before another dangerous European player is on the stage when Anastasija Sevastova goes up against Kristie Ahn. The final match on this court sees two Frenchmen meeting when Ugo Humbert takes on Gael Monfils in an appealing conclusion to play.

Best of the Rest

There is a really good card out on Court 12 where Felix Auger-Aliassime is the headline act but Milos Raonic and Viktoria Azarenka provide a decent support card. Elina Svitolina and Karen Khachanov are the star attractions out on Court 18 with Daniil Medvedev also on that court while elsewhere around the grounds we have the likes of Roberto Bautista Agut, Dusan Lajovic, Sofia Kenin, Benoit Paire and Grigor Dimitrov looking to move through to the second round.

Men’s Betting

There are a couple of bets which get me started in the men’s draw this week with the first of them being on a Nicolas Jarry, who is being heavily backed to beat Andreas Seppi. That is no surprise to me because the Chilean has a big serve and a big game and should be nicely suited to the grass courts. He’s already beaten Stefanos Tsitsipas on grass this year and his displays have been much better than his results have suggested. Seppi is a solid veteran but he has only won two main draw matches since Delray Beach in February so he looks vulnerable to me. I’ll take the Chilean to come through this one.

Sometimes there can be a concern when a player has a good week before a Grand Slam that he will be jaded for the main show but Miomir Kecmanovic is young enough to overcome that and actually his good week in Turkey coming into this tournament should act as a real positive. With that in mind, I think he can be too good for Roberto Carballes Buena who is going to be more suited to a clay court and the drier conditions could just go against him. The Spaniard hasn’t offered much in two grass court events this term and I’ll be surprised if he has much more about him here.

Women’s Betting

I’ll go with a couple in the women’s draw as well on Monday where I expect Aliaksandra Sasnovich to be a lot closer to Simona Halep than the odds suggest. Sasnovich is no stranger to dumping out a big name here, she beat Petra Kvitova in this round last year and made it through to the second week of the tournament, and although her form isn’t the best coming in here, the surrounding can inspire her to a decent performance against Halep, who while competent on grass much prefers the other surfaces. It might well be that Halep has enough about her to win this one but I can’t ignore the 5.5 game start that the Belarussian is getting.

The last match of the day on court sees Su-Wei Hsieh up against Jelena Ostapenko in what should be a cracking contest if the Latvian is fully fit as I expect her to be. Ostapenko has a good record here having made the last eight and the last four in the last two years while Hsieh has that awkward game that makes her tough to face on any surface least of all this one. I think this will be quite some clash and I’m expecting it to go to a third set and possibly beyond. Given that is the case I think over 21.5 games looks good in this one.
