Wimbledon 2019 – Day 4 Tips and Betting Preview

The second round of both singles draws and the opening stages of the doubles competitions will make up the Thursday action under yet more sunny skies at SW19 with plenty to look forward to across another busy day in the third Grand Slam of the year.

We have the match which could be the best of the tournament at any stage to enjoy when Rafael Nadal meets Nick Kyrgios but also on the card we have Roger Federer, Ash Barty, Serena Williams, Angelique Kerber and a certain Andy Murray.

Day 3 Recap

It was another good day for the majority of the bigger players with Novak Djokovic, Karolina Pliskova, Caroline Wozniacki, Kevin Anderson and Simona Halep all making it through to the third round but the show was stolen by 15-year-old Coco Gauff who once again demonstrated her quality to make it through and leave some bookmakers quoting just 8/1 on her to win the title now.

Thanks to that win it was a decent day on the betting front for us with Anett Kontaveit and both Ivo Karlovic and Thomas Fabbiano delivering the goods. The latter match predictably went five sets and on for ages while Kontaveit was too good for Heather Watson as expected. Unfortunately injury struck Miomir Kecmanovic and Feliciano Lopez took the first set but couldn’t sustain his advantage but another profitable day nonetheless.

Centre Court

A British player will be opening the show on Centre Court on Thursday when Cameron Norrie goes up against Kei Nishikori in a match many people believe he can come out on top in. It is British all the way in the initial stages on Centre as Jo Konta follows that first match. Her second round clash sees her taking on Katerina Siniakova in a match which she might need to be careful in. The singles play on Centre is rounded off by the eagerly anticipated clash between Nick Kyrgios and Rafael Nadal which should have plenty of fireworks attached to it.

Court 1

I dare say you won’t be disappointed if you have a Court 1 ticket on Thursday. Former champion Petra Kvitova takes on Kiki Mladenovic first up in an appealing match before the great Roger Federer graces this court when he takes on British wildcard Jay Clarke for a place in the third round. Another tennis great follows them when Serena Williams steps out to play Kaja Juvan in a match the American will be expected to win and then if everything goes to plan Andy Murray is likely to be on this court for his first round doubles match.

Court 2

The world number one and French Open champion Ash Barty gets things going on Court 2 when she meets Alison Van Uytvanck who had a decent run here last year. British star Dan Evans is then on court after them. He meets seed number 18 in Nikoloz Basilashvili in a match the Briton is favourite to win. Defending women’s champion Angelique Kerber adds to a sparkling Court 2 card on Thursday when she goes up against Lauren Davis before the show is closed by Matteo Berrettini going up against the always popular Marcos Baghdatis.

Court 3

Former US Open champion Sloane Stephens is first up out on the tightly packed Court 3. Her second round opponent is Yafan Wang of China. The loser of that epic semi-final of last year, John Isner, is back on court in the second game of the day when he meets Mikhail Kukushkin before the last singles match to be staged on this court on Thursday sees the Italian star Fabio Fognini taking on Marton Fucsovics for a place in the third round.

Best of the Rest

There are plenty of singles matches mixed in with doubles contests out on the outside courts on Thursday with the likes of Marin Cilic, Amanda Anisimova, Alex De Minaur, Kiki Bertens, Belinda Bencic and Lucas Pouille among the seeded players you’ll be able to watch either with a ground pass or on the many streaming options available to us watching on from home.

Men’s Betting

I’ll go with three bets in the men’s draw on Thursday with the first being on Steve Johnson who I don’t think should be quite such an outsider against Alex De Minaur. De Minaur is a good player who could develop into a special one but on this surface I’m with the American who actually has a decent enough record on grass without it being awe-inspiring. De Minaur has won both their previous matches, both on a hard court, but he only won one match in two warm up events coming into the Championships and lost to Aljaz Bedene at Queens which isn’t a great result. He had a good run on the grass last season but at the lower levels and I fancy he is vulnerable to Johnson here. Johnson knows the game and looked decent enough in beating Reilly Opelka at Eastbourne last week. That form has been franked so I’m happy to be on the American at odds against.

Two battlers go up against each other when John Millman takes on Laslo Djere and as such I’m expecting a bit of a marathon match here. We saw Millman go the distance with Fernando Verdasco at Eastbourne last week while Djere had a lengthy first round clash here. I would expect Millman to win this match but you’ve got to think there will be four or five sets in this one, which should yield plenty of time for the over 36.5 games line to come in before the final point is played out on Court 14.

I can’t ignore a small punt on Nick Kyrgios at the prices. It is only a small punt too because you never know what you are going to get from him but he’s 3-3 with Rafael Nadal in career meetings which tells me he might just show up here. The war of social media words between the two might also inspire a performance from the Aussie and on this surface you would have to suggest this is 50:50 and maybe slightly weighted in Kyrgios’ favour if he does actually fancy the job. Of course that is a big if but at 3/1 we can afford to pay to find out. Nadal looked pretty rusty in his first round match and can’t afford to be off the pace here. It could be worth a small play on the Australian here.

Women’s Betting

Just the one stands out to me in the women’s draw on Thursday. I was a bit worried about a lack of grass court action for Carla Suarez Navarro coming into the tournament but I needn’t have been because she looked ruthless against Sam Stosur in the first round and was very impressive. She meets Pauline Parmentier in the second round and the French woman might just be overrated on her win over Maria Sharapova in the first round. I won’t take anything away from the win but the emotional interview the Russian gave after that match highlighted that she was injured which puts me off the French veteran. There are 57 places between these two in the world rankings. I expect that to show on Thursday.
