World Championship Snooker 2023 Qualifying – Day 2 Tips and Betting Preview

The first round of the World Championship qualifying competition continues on Tuesday when a total of 16 players will book their place in the second round while the same amount will see their season come to an end.

There is plenty on the line inside the English Institute of Sport which should guarantee us plenty of drama. As with Monday, the morning matches on Tuesday start and then finish in the evening while the afternoon session sees the Monday afternoon matches conclude.

Monday Recap

It was a good day of action on the first day of the competition but unfortunately not from a betting standpoint as our bet for the day, Steven Hallworth, went down in a deciding frame to John Astley. There was better news on the outright front as Daniel Wells cruised into the second round. Elsewhere youngsters Stan Moody and Anton Kazakov came through beating Andres Petrov and Mohamed Ibrahim 10-7 and 10-6 respectively. Martin O’Donnell caused a bit of a surprise on the day when he beat Marco Fu 10-5 while Haydon Pinhey saw off Dean Young by the same score, Jamie O’Neill was also a 10-5 victor against Bulcsu Revesz and Dylan Emery won 10-4 against Hai Long Ma.

Morning Session

As with Monday, half of the matches in the morning session will be streamed on Discovery Plus. One of those matches will see two Thai players going at it when the popular and entertaining Dechawat Poomjaeng takes on one half of the Mixed Doubles champions Mink Nutcharut. Barry Pinches is the highest ranked player on show in this session and he will begin another World Championship quest against the Irish amateur Ross Bulman. Andrew Pagett is next in the rankings on show on Tuesday morning. He has a potentially tricky test against Gao Yang who is better than an average amateur. Andy Lee will also be on show when he meets Andrew Higginson.

The other four matches will not be live streamed but could be competitive. It is hard to know who should be favourite in the match between the professional Oliver Brown and the amateur Ross Muir. Sean O’Sullivan is another tour card holder going up against an amateur when he meets Liam Graham. The same situation applies to Peng Yisong when he faces the former Shootout champion Michael Georgiou while Sanderson Lam will go up against Liam Pullen in the other game.

Afternoon Session

The afternoon session sees the matches which began on Monday afternoon coming to a close. Three of the four streamed matches have a one-sided score to them with Alfie Burden returning 7-2 up on Rebecca Kenna and Florian Nussle ahead of Michael Judge by the same margin. Aaron Hill was 5-2 up on Baipat Siripaporn but David Lilley is only 5-4 up on Rory McLeod in the battle of the seniors challengers.

The leaders in the four matches away from the streamed cameras all have sizable advantages as well. Allan Taylor enjoyed the perfect opening session and he’ll come back needing one more frame to dump Filipp Kalnins out of the competition as he leads 9-0. Iulian Boiko opened up a 7-2 lead on Muhammad Asif and he’ll be expected to complete the job on Tuesday as will Adam Duffy who is 6-3 up on Billy Joe Castle overnight. Asjad Iqbal is 6-3 up on Jenson Kendrick heading into their final session.

Betting

When the prices went up for the first round of this competition I was surprised to see Peng Yisong as such an outsider to beat Michael Georgiou as he is. Yisong hasn’t had the best season on the tour but he has had some nasty draws. Twice he has drawn Anthony McGill straight off the bat and others to beat him include Shaun Murphy and Ricky Walden while he ran into Jimmy White at the wrong time in Berlin. In and around all of that though, Peng has drawn with Judd Trump in the Championship League and beaten Mark Selby in German Masters qualifying so that shows his talent.

Georgiou has been off the tour for a while now and hasn’t really shown a huge amount of sign of getting back on. He has only been past the third round of one of the five Q Tour events he has played this season and hasn’t been in any of the professional events as a top up apart from the Shootout so he isn’t one of these amateurs who has been playing all over the shop and comes in here active and full of confidence. If Peng can settle early I think he’ll have enough to come through here.
