The World Championship draws to a close inside the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield on Monday but the day might not last as long as the crowd at the venue and the millions watching on around the world on TV would like.
This is historically one of the best days on the sporting calendar but unless we have a distinct turnaround from Sunday we are going to be devoid of the drama and tension that the conclusion of this event usually carries.
Day 16 Recap
17 frames were played on the opening day of the final which leaves a maximum of 18 frames over the two sessions that remain on Monday. Ronnie O’Sullivan needs just a third of those frames to win a seventh world title as he opened up a dominant 12-5 lead on Judd Trump on Sunday. Trump clung to his coattails in the opening session when he won the last two frames to come out just 5-3 down but O’Sullivan pulled away in the evening winning seven of the nine frames that were played and he will head into the final day of the tournament as an emphatic favourite to win from here.

In Play Betting
We are already involved in this final with the Ronnie O’Sullivan -1.5 frames bet which we flagged up before the first ball was hit. That is as good as won. There is absolutely no way that Judd Trump wins 12-5 from here which he would need to in order scupper that bet. The only question to be answered now is how far O’Sullivan wins this final by. I mentioned in the preview for the final that three of his six victories have been by an 18-8 score and I certainly wouldn’t rule that out for a fourth time.
That is now a 13/2 shot and I certainly wouldn’t put anyone off taking that but we’ve had a good tournament for match bets, especially in the latter stages of it so I’m going to look to boost the profit with another solid bet which is for there to be under 28.5 frames. That means Trump has to get to 11 to scupper this bet. In other words he needs to win 6-5 from this position. I think his race is run though and I actually expect Ronnie to open up the margin from here. Trump can’t seem to get in from distance, can’t beat O’Sullivan in the tactical department over a long period and now he’s under so much pressure that when he is in he is missing colours off their spots. We’ll see flashes of brilliance from Trump because I expect him to come out all guns blazing and going for his shots but Ronnie can pick him off to win this no worse than 18-10.
