As with the opening day of the tournament, there are two sessions of play on the second day of action in the Grand Slam of Darts on Sunday and it could well be a pivotal day in the group stages of the event.
We saw some excellent darts on the first day of the competition which included both of our match bets winning at tasty prices so hopefully the quality of play will be good on Sunday and our bets just as good.
In the afternoon session four groups play their second matches with the winners from the first games playing each other and the losers also playing each other.
Group B
The first game in this group on Sunday is actually the third match of the day and it sees the two losers from Saturday – Gerwyn Price and Scott Waites going at it. Both suffered narrow defeats so their tournament is far from over but another loss here will be critical. Later in the afternoon Robert Thornton will play Dimitri van den Bergh for control of the group.
Group C
This group opens up the day with the losers from the first day first up here too. That means Jeff Smith and Ted Evetts gets things going on Sunday while the final match of the afternoon sees the winners, Peter Wright and Simon Whitlock playing each other. The winner of that is likely to win the group.
Group F
We’re underway in the second match of the day in this group with Nathan Aspinall looking to put his towelling to Raymond Barneveld behind him when he goes up against Mensur Suljovic. Many were surprised Suljovic lost on the opening day but we weren’t as we backed Noppert to beat him and the BDO man’s reward for that win is a clash with Barneveld in the penultimate match of the afternoon.
Group G
It was pretty crazy in this group on Saturday and in the fourth match of the afternoon the two losers Jamie Hughes and Dave Chisnall will collide to keep their tournament hopes alive. Hughes will be ruing surrendering a 3-0 lead to James Wade while Chisnall missed a million doubles against James Wilson. Wade and Wilson battle it out for top spot in the sixth match of the day.
Betting
I’m repeating myself I admit but I’m not going to go too mad in these group matches just because the format doesn’t allow for juicy bets but often in these sessions with the way groups are dictated there is often a bet or two which stands out and there is indeed one here.
I think the Belgian youngster Dimitri van den Bergh is overpriced to see off Robert Thornton. In one way the pressure is off the Scot given that he has beaten the man many would say is the main danger in the section in Scott Waites but Thornton wasn’t expected to win that match and that looked to sit well with him. He is expected to win this one and I wonder how he’ll handle that pressure having not won many matches recently.
Van den Burgh missed a few doubles in his win over Gerwyn Price on Saturday but we can forgive him for that. He’s young and it was his debut in the tournament but having got over the line he can relax and settle in and give this a good go with nothing to lose so I think he can cause an upset. We only have to look back to the World Championship to see what this kid can do and anything like that form makes him a genuine chance here at a big price.
