The quarter finals of the Africa Cup of Nations come to a close on Sunday when the final two matches in the round are played out. That means that at the end of the night we will know the four sides moving forward to battle it out for the title.
We saw two tight quarter finals on Saturday and much more of the same is expected on Sunday but hopefully there is some compelling and captivating action nonetheless.
DR Congo vs Ghana
The Group C winners DR Congo takes on the Group D runners-up Ghana but it is the latter that are the favourites for this match. That is understandable given their status in Africa and their squad list which is extremely strong on paper.
Credit must go to DR Congo for how they came through their group, a group let us not forget that had the Ivory Coast in it but things get different in the knockout stages. It all tends to tighten up in the latter stages and you need a piece of magic or undoubted quality to open the game up.
I think that is more likely to come from Ghana in this match. So far in the tournament they have played two tight matches when it mattered and edged both 1-0 and I can see them doing the same again here.
Egypt vs Morocco
The last of the quarter finals is a real rivalry match between two nations who have little time for each other as the Group D winners Egypt take on the Group C runners-up Morocco. Had you told Morocco after their opening defeat that they would make it this far they would have taken it and they will love the match up they have been handed.
That is because these two nations have met on 26 previous occasions and Egypt have won just two of them. Matches between the two tend to be tight but that generally seems to benefit Morocco. That said eight of the last 12 meetings have been draws and 20 of their last 21 matches have gone under 2.5 goals including the last 15. Those are strong statistics.
I’m going to side with the statistics and history as I believe this will be a low scoring draw, quite possibly 0-0, so I’m happy to be on under 1.75 goals. You have to go back 16 matches for the last time this bet lost in full. If they find a couple of goals between them and we lose half then so be it but Egypt only have two goals in three games in the tournament and Morocco four in three with three coming against a leaky Togo. It screams low scoring to me.
With all that in mind and given that these two sides hate each other and won’t want to take a risk and lose to the other I’m going to have a dabble on each to win on penalties. We’ve already seen one match go all the way in this round and this has all the hallmarks of being another.
