The Australian Open tennis event has reached the business end now with the quarter finals getting underway in Melbourne on Tuesday as the top half of both singles draws being played out on the Rod Laver Arena.
The pressure will be rising on Tuesday but we have four Grand Slam winners on show in the four singles matches which should ensure a real quality to the action.
Venus Williams vs Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova
The day begins with the first of the women’s quarter finals as Venus Williams takes on a Pavlyuchenkova who has come through some difficult looking matches so far with a real quality and some heavy hitting.
The bookmakers have this match around 50/50 and that is how I see it too. Venus would get the nod on the experienced front while the Russian is hitting the ball so cleanly and if that continues she could lead her veteran opponent a merry dance.
If you are betting on this one it comes down to whether you like experience or power and depending on which it is you like would depend on who you back. I’m in neither camp really so I’ll sit this one out.
Coco Vandeweghe vs Garbine Muguruza
The second match of the day sees the American powerhouse Coco Vandeweghe taking on the French Open champion Garbine Muguruza in a match which has the potential to be very close.
Vandeweghe comes into this one off the back of a superb win over Angelique Kerber in the last round not to mention the epic win over Eugenie Bouchard the round before that but Muguruza hasn’t dropped a set in the tournament so far so this should be quality.
The two have met three times in the past with Vandeweghe winning two of those meetings but all three have contained an extended set and given how well these two are playing I’m expecting tight sets here.
Both women are winning more than 70% of points behind their first serve in this tournament so breaks are likely to be at a minimum which leads me to thinking there will be more than 21.5 games in this one before it is won.
Stan Wawrinka vs Jo-Wilfried Tsonga
Potentially the match of the day is the final one in the day session as the former winner Stan Wawrinka takes on Jo-Wilfried Tsonga for a place in another Grand Slam semi-final.
These two men have met on seven previous occasions and there has never been a straight sets finish in any of those matches. What’s more only two of those seven matches haven’t had a tiebreak in them so all the indications are that this will be a lengthy quarter final.
The games line is 41.5 which sometimes can look a touch on the high side but with the potential for at least four sets and for a tiebreak or two along the way there is enough margin in the game to go over on that line.
Mischa Zverev vs Roger Federer
The conqueror of Andy Murray, Mischa Zverev, takes on a Roger Federer who might have his best ever chance of an 18th Grand Slam title with all the big names having gone out of the tournament now in the only singles match in the night session.
Zverev was very assured in taking care of Murray and a repeat of that could see him run Federer close too. In saying that he has to battle a comedown and Federer has looked in great form so far. The styles of these two should blend nicely to watch but it isn’t really one to bet on in my eyes.
