2017 China Championship Snooker – Last 16 Betting Preview

We are slowly getting towards the business end of the China Championship and on Saturday the last 16 of the tournament will be played out across the two sessions of play in Guangzhou.

Friday was a brutal day for the seeded players with many of them crashing out of the competition which leaves a mixture of big and new names remaining in the tournament. Judd Trump, Barry Hawkins, Marco Fu, John Higgins and the home hope Ding Junhui all bit the dust on Friday as the lesser ranked players came to the fore.

Morning Session

We are now down to just four matches per session in this tournament from here on in and the televised tables in the morning will be occupied by Shaun Murphy and Martin Gould. Murphy has a juicy looking clash with Stephen Maguire while Gould takes on the Chinese youngster Zhou Yuelong.

The other two matches in the morning session sees Mike Dunn taking on Luca Brecel while two dark horses for this title meet too when Mark Williams takes on Tom Ford in a juicy looking match.

Afternoon Session

The big match in the afternoon is the repeat of the 2006 World Championship semi-final when Graeme Dott, fresh from his victory over Judd Trump on Friday, takes on Ronnie O’Sullivan. The other televised match sees Li Hang taking on the former world finalist in Matthew Stevens.

There are two matches away from the cameras in this session too and they see Fergal O’Brien facing Alan McManus and Mark Davis taking on Ali Carter for places in the quarter finals.

Betting

I like three bets over the course of the day on Saturday. In the morning session I think Luca Brecel should be a whole lot shorter to beat Mike Dunn than he is. I think the Belgian will come through here with a fair bit in hand. Dunn did well to see off Joe Perry in the first round but he was not so fluent in the second round. Brecel just took Marco Fu to the cleaners and the way he is playing he should have a bit in hand coming through here.

Li Hang is playing some nice snooker at the minute and I see no reason why that can’t continue on Saturday. In fairness Matthew Stevens played some nice stuff against Thepchaiya Un-Nooh on Friday and it is good to see the Welshman playing well but Hang should be nicely suited to these conditions and judging by the form of making back to back tons in the previous round he looks a decent price at odds against.

I took Mark Davis to see off Barry Hawkins on Friday and he duly did but I am going against him on Saturday against an Ali Carter who I expect to be too solid for him. Carter has a decent record in China and it won’t have been lost on him that all these seeds have been falling by the wayside and he has a big opportunity for a significant cheque this week. I don’t expect him to give that up gently. Davis has been in good form recently but I wouldn’t fancy him in a tight match against something like Carter so it is the Essex man for me here.
