2017 Confederations Cup – Australia vs Germany Betting Preview

There is just the one match in the Confederations Cup on Monday and it concludes the opening round of games as the Asian champions Australia take on world champions Germany in Group B in Sochi.

This group got underway on Sunday night when Chile were too good for Cameroon and these two sides have the chance to set their stalls out in the pursuit of the Copa America winners in this match.

Australia

Over this side of the world we don’t get too see too much of Australia in international matches and the fact they play in Asia makes it even harder to decipher their form but we did get the chance to see them in a recent friendly with Brazil where if we are being honest they were given a bit of a run around.

Australia do have attacking intent in them and they will need that if they are going to qualify from this group but the real worry for them is how exposed they could be in defence against three decent attacking sides themselves. If they can find a way to tighten up without losing their attacking shape they would be in business.

Germany

It will be interesting to see how Germany go in this tournament. Normally we would expect them to win any event they take part in but with the World Cup a year away Joachim Low has decided to use this tournament to blood some young players and get them prepared for what some of them will face in 12 months time.

That means we have a youthful and dynamic Germany side to watch in this competition but I’m not convinced that they should be written off because of that but whether they have the defensive discipline or the ruthless clinical streak that more senior German tournament sides are known for remains to be seen.

Team News

Australia are expected to start with new Brighton keeper Matthew Ryan between the sticks while Tim Cahill could only be used from the bench as he has reached a veteran stage at this level.

Germany will be without Manuel Neuer, Mesut Ozil, Thomas Muller and Mats Hummels so they will have a whole new spine in this event. Julian Draxler looks the star name in the squad.

Betting

This match should be taken as a watching brief for the most part but I do believe we are going to see goals in the game just purely because of the way Australia play their football. They play an open style and look to get men forward and attack but that can leave them vulnerable.

Germany might lack the genuine firepower of their more senior sides but in the likes of Draxler and Sandro Wagner they still have goals in their side. With that in mind I expect this to be an open match and full of goals so I’ll take over 2.75 goals here.
