2017 German Darts Grand Prix – Tournament Outright Betting Preview

The European Tour holds a second event in as many weeks when the inaugural German Darts Grand Prix takes place in Mannheim this weekend. Some of those players who were involved in the World Series events last month are giving this tournament a miss but Michael van Gerwen and Peter Wright add a star quality to proceedings.

The Format

The European Tour format is well known by now but those who are new to betting on darts will see the 16 seeds taking on 16 qualifiers in the last 32 on Saturday. The remainder of the tournament from the last 16 down to the final takes place on a busy day on Sunday. As ever each match from start to finish is the best of 11 legs.

Top Half

Peter Wright is the main seed in the top half of the tournament this weekend. Numerically it is Mensur Suljovic who is the next highest ranked seed but Daryl Gurney could be his biggest danger. Alan Norris, Benito van de Pas, Ian White, Mervyn King and Rob Cross are the other seeds in a competitive part of the draw.

The qualifiers in this part of proceedings will make it further competitive too. Mick McGowan, Jan Dekker, Keegan Brown, Jermaine Wattimena, Darren Webster, Jamie Caven, Ronny Huybrechts and Vincent van der Voort made up the draw in the top half.

Bottom Half

This half is all about Michael van Gerwen this week but I would suggest he may not have it completely his own way this weekend. I say that because the other seeds in his half, Simon Whitlock, Dave Chisnall, Michael Smith, Joe Cullen, Kim Huybrechts, Jelle Klaasen and Gerwyn Price are of decent quality.

One or two of the qualifiers are in exceptional form too not least Kyle Anderson who is in the form of his life. Krzysztof Ratajski, Richard North, Jamie Bain, Tony Martinez, Jamie Lewis, Nathan Aspinall and Daniel Larsson complete the draw.

Betting

I deliberately opposed those who were involved in the World Series events last weekend but their body clocks should have adjusted by now which makes me think the 16/1 on Daryl Gurney is well worth taking. I’ve been singing his praises for ages and he is really starting to show why now. Mensur Suljovic rates a decent challenge in his quarter but I truly believe we should be looking at Gurney as a likely tournament winner these days. He’s my main bet.

Darren Webster could be worth a go in the other quarter in the top half of the draw. Admittedly Peter Wright would loom as a huge early opponent but Webster can take care of anyone on his day. He banged in six 180s and a 101 average on Friday and with his next opponent Alan Norris capable of missing doubles those 180s would be useful against him. We saw last weekend how these draws can open right up and at 66/1 I can’t resist a cheeky punt on the Norfolk man.
