The first round of the US Open will be completed in both the singles draws on another busy day of tennis at Flushing Meadows on Tuesday. It is a day which will see some of the very biggest names in the game beginning their quests for glory in what is another star studded day in the Big Apple.
Monday Recap
It was not the best day to be a British woman with Jo Konta and Heather Watson both biting the dust while we also lost David Ferrer from the men’s draw but the big names all made it safely through. There were wins for Caroline Wozniacki, Venus Williams, Marin Cilic, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and John Isner throughout the course of the day.
In terms of betting for us on Monday we have only seen four completed at the time of writing with the night session match going on as this preview is being written. Of those four we had winners with the Konjuh against Barty game line and Jordan Thompson on the handicap as he actually beat Jack Sock.
Arthur Ashe Stadium
The world number one and 2016 runner-up Karolina Pliskova opens up the day on the main court when she faces Magda Linette before the defending champion Angelique Kerber gets her defence underway. The German takes on Naomi Osaka before the day session is rounded off with Rafael Nadal facing Dusan Lajovic.
The night session is a tasty affair with two home players on show. Madison Keys is first up when she takes on the talented Belgian, Elise Mertens while Roger Federer plays the Next-Gen star Frances Tiafoe in the second match.
Louis Armstrong Stadium
The fourth seed Elina Svitolina takes to the courts first on the second show court. She faces Katerina Siniakova before the former champion Juan Martin del Potro is back in New York looking to build on his quarter final run of 12 months ago. He plays Henri Laaksonen of Switzerland and then comes the all-American clash between Alison Riske and Coco Vandeweghe. The last match on this court sees Nick Kyrgios playing his fellow Australian John Millman.
Grandstand
Dominic Thiem starts things off on Grandstand when he faces Alex de Minaur before Eugenie Bouchard is back in New York. She plays Evgeniya Rodina of Russia. They are followed by one of the ties of the first round when Svetlana Kuznetsova plays Marketa Vondrousova. The action on Grandstand draws to a close with Grigor Dimitrov playing Vaclav Safranek.
Court 17
There is a wonderful schedule on this court on Tuesday. It begins with the French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko facing Lara Arruabarrena from Spain. Gael Monfils follows them when he faces on his fellow Frenchman in Jeremy Chardy before Tomas Berdych plays Ryan Harrison. The action finishes with Catherine Bellis up against Nao Hibino of Japan.
Best of the Rest
As ever those with ground passes won’t be short changed on Tuesday. David Goffin and Daria Gavrilova are on Court 5 while Richard Gasquet and Agnieszka Radwanska are seasoned campaigners on Court 10.
Other seeds on show around the grounds include Roberto Bautista Agut, Adrian Mannarino, Feliciano Lopez and Kiki Mladenovic on what should be a cracking day of tennis.

Men’s Betting
I like two bets in the men’s draw on Tuesday with the first of them being the runner up from last week in Damir Dzumhur who takes on Pablo Cuevas. The Uruguayan has gone right off the boil and hasn’t won a match since the French Open and you wouldn’t think that is going to change here against an opponent who is in brilliant form. Dzumhur took care of Kyle Edmund and Gilles Simon last week and recently beat Feliciano Lopez on a hard court so he’s going nicely. I expect him to have way too much for Cuevas.
Taylor Fritz is not going to lack for support in his home major and I fancy he can take care of Marcos Baghdatis on Tuesday. Baghdatis is not in the best of form while Fritz had a couple of good wins last week to back up a win over Albert Ramos-Vinolas not so long ago. The power that the American has can see him past a Baghdatis who has a bang average record in this tournament.
Women’s Betting
There is only one I like on the women’s side on Tuesday. It comes in one of the showpiece matches on Ashe as Angelique Kerber begins her title defence. I’m not in the slightest bit convinced she will beat Naomi Osaka but I’m even less convinced she will do so in straight sets. The alarming dip in form of the German is one of the mysteries of 2017 and while she might find it in herself to come through here the Japanese youngster more than has what it takes to dump her out.
Osaka took a set off Karolina Pliskova recently and pushed Venus Williams close at Wimbledon on a surface she should have been blown away on. This is a big stage which is slightly concerning and it is the first round so I’ll take the youngster to win a set rather than the match just in case she gets a touch of the old clinchers disease.
