2017 WGC Mexico Golf – Tournament Outright Betting Preview

The first World Golf Championship event of the year takes place this week when the stars of the golfing world descend on Mexico for the first time in the history of the event. The WGC Mexico sees a select field doing battle for a huge prize which could yet give us more clues for next month’s The Masters.

The tournament was formerly known as the WGC Cadillac which was won last year by Adam Scott and he does go to Mexico looking to defend the title.

The Course

This is very much the unknown this week. The Club de Golf Chapultepec is the host for the tournament. It is located in the mountains west of Mexico City. There is an elevation of roughly 7,500 feet so altitude will make distance control vitally important.

The course is a par 71 which measures 7,330 yards but we know it will play much shorter than that with the altitude in play. It is likely to play somewhere around 6,600 yards. Strategy and position off the tee are big things this week but ultimately on a course of this track your player will have to score in what should be a low scoring event.

The Field

Anyone who is anyone in golf these days is here. The field includes all four major champions from 2016 – Danny Willett, Dustin Johnson, Henrik Stenson and Jimmy Walker. It also includes last week’s winner too in Rickie Fowler.

Jordan Spieth, Adam Scott, Justin Rose, Hideki Matsuyama and a certain Rory McIlroy all tee it up this week to add absolute star flavour to the field who should combine for some special golf over the four days.

Market Leaders

Dustin Johnson will tee off a 7/1 favourite fresh from his win in the Genesis Open at Riviera a couple of weeks ago. He is a point and a bit bigger than Jordan Spieth who is entitled to be right in the mix too.

Rory McIlroy is 12/1 on his competitive return but I wonder if all the hoo-hah about his round of golf with the President will affect him on the course. Hideki Matsuyama and Henrik Stenson tee off as 15/1 chances with both having strong hopes of winning.

Last week’s Honda Classic winner Rickie Fowler is 20/1 to win back to back and it is 22/1 bar those in what is an absolutely stacked field.

Main Bets

I’m going to take two main bets this week with the first of those being a man I took at the Genesis Open a couple of weeks ago in Justin Rose.

I’ve heard a few players say this course is similar to Riviera and I guess what they mean is that the grasses on the greens are the same and it bodes well for Rose given that he finished fourth in the Genesis. Distance control is a massive thing this week and few are better in that regard than Rose. If he can get some putts to the hole he is capable of taking this one down.

Tyrrell Hatton’s PGA Tour debut last week ultimately ended in disappointment but there was so much to like about him and his play throughout the week and I’m expecting to see more of that here too. He is another with good distance control and he has a good record in the Swiss Alps which is no bad thing either. I think there is a huge week in Hatton and it could be in these conditions.

Outsiders

I’m also going to chance my arm with a few outsiders this week. Crans-sur-Sierre and the altitude there is a big factor in my thinking here and as such I’m going with three successful men around there.

The last three winners of that tournament are Alex Noren, Danny Willett and David Lipsky and all three seem to suit the likely credentials needed here in that they position the golf ball well, find a huge number of greens and then putt well.

We know Noren and Willett can compete at this level. Lipsky might be a floater in the field and this might be beyond him at this stage of his career but he has two top five finishes on the European Tour already this season so he’s in good form and he’s a huge price to pay to see how well he goes.
