The first Sunday of the Premier League campaign sees three matches being played out up and down the country and we get to see the champions for the first time. We also see two sides chasing the title as well as a couple of sides who will be looking to make big improvements.
Two of the matches form the Super Sunday showdowns with the other match being around on streams and updated in the usual places on what should be a cracking afternoon to conclude the first round of matches.
Liverpool vs West Ham
The first half of Super Sunday sees the Champions League finalists Liverpool taking on a West Ham side whose remit must be to make drastic improvements over the course of this campaign in the season opener at Anfield.
Liverpool have spent big money in the off season to attempt to close the gap on Manchester City and when you put together the outlay they did the returns need to be fairly instant. West Ham were not shy in the transfer market either so they will be looking for a big performance here. If this match was a couple of weeks time then I might have gone with the overs here but I just think it might be a little soon to be asking these two to cover 3.25 goals in full. I’ll sit this one out.
Southampton vs Burnley
The one match that is not part of the Super Sunday comes from St Mary’s Stadium as Southampton take on a Burnley side who have been jet setting in the Europa League in recent times hence why this game was moved back a day.
Southampton were quite ordinary last season and it will be interesting to see if they have improved any or not. Burnley will be advantaged by the fact they have already played three competitive fixtures this season although the travelling to and from Turkey in recent days is a concern. If Burnley had been at home on Thursday or somewhere closer to home there would have been a clear case to be made for them being value here but I’m wary of their travels. I still think Southampton will be a poor side so I’m in no rush to back them so I can easily sit this one out.

Arsenal vs Man City
The big match of the weekend is saved for last as Arsenal take on the champions Manchester City in a clash which will tell us of City’s credentials this season but might also give us an indication of what we can expect from the Gunners too.
Although we can expect Arsenal to be a little more rugged in defence I don’t think they are going to lose too much of their attacking philosophy. If anything they might be slightly more dynamic which will be no bad thing. I think we all know by now what to expect of City so I’m expecting goals to come readily in this match.
City warmed up with the Community Shield last week and can open up any side in front of them but Arsenal will fancy their chances of bagging a goal or two along the way. I’m surprised we can get a 3 goal line for this one but I’m happy to take the over on it.
