Big Matches

The televised offering on Monday comes from Fratton Park where Portsmouth host Coventry City in a big match in the race for promotion. Coventry have played the top three in recent times and haven’t lost to any of them so Portsmouth have their work cut out in that one. Barnsley will look to move within two points of Luton who play on Tuesday when they head to Plymouth Argyle and it is a long trip for Sunderland too when they go to play-off chasing Peterborough United.

Best of the Rest

There are a couple of huge matches at the bottom of the table on Monday too. Wycombe Wanderers and Walsall are both in this crazy race to beat the drop and they meet at Adams Park while Bristol Rovers and Rochdale are not yet safe either. They meet at the Memorial Ground. Charlton Athletic play host to struggling Scunthorpe United while already relegated Bradford City host Gillingham.

Betting

I’ll go with three matches here. Coventry City have won 5-4 at Sunderland, drawn 2-2 at Barnsley and drawn 1-1 at Luton in recent times so how we are getting a +0.75 handicap on them against the worst of the leading four in Portsmouth I have absolutely no idea. It isn’t like Coventry are not playing for anything either as they are still chasing the final play-off spot. The Sky Blues are excellent on the counter attack but they have the players in the centre of the park to keep the ball when they need to. There is so much pressure on Portsmouth here given that they go to Sunderland on Saturday. They would have slipped up on Monday if Stevie Wonder wasn’t running the line and I don’t expect them to win here. Coventry with the start looks good to me.

Burton Albion have been good to me in recent weeks and with no real signs of a Southend United revival I’m happy to take the Brewers on a draw no bet line. Burton lost to Portsmouth on Monday but that was a travesty as they looked the side more likely to win it before Portsmouth got a controversial winner. They had been in very good form prior to that though and the freedom of having little at stake can see them play the better football. We saw how much Southend are struggling to get over the line on Friday so Burton have to be the bet here.

Another side who are showing no signs of a revival are Scunthorpe United and I expect them to be seen off by a Charlton Athletic side who will be smarting from losing on Good Friday. Charlton are very impressive at home this season with their last defeat at The Valley coming back in October. Scunthorpe haven’t been great anywhere this term but they have been very average away from home recently and are without a win in six on their travels. They have only won one of their last 11 matches and have only scored three times in their last six outings. This is an ideal chance for Charlton to get back to winning ways.
