The full 24 teams in Sky Bet League 1 bring the New Year in with a full fixture list on New Year’s Day which sees both the top of the table and the bottom end of it in the spotlight as 2019 gets going in some style.
The top seven have pulled clear in the league table but things have really tightened up at the other end of it and each match for the teams involved at the wrong end is beginning to take on extra importance so there should be plenty of competitive matches on Tuesday.
Tuesday’s fixtures are as follows:
Blackpool v Sunderland
Bradford City v Accrington Stanley
Bristol Rovers v Burton Albion
Charlton Athletic v Walsall
Doncaster Rovers v Rochdale
Luton Town v Barnsley
Peterborough United v Scunthorpe United
Plymouth Argyle v Oxford United
Portsmouth v AFC Wimbledon
Shrewsbury Town v Fleetwood Town
Southend United v Gillingham
Wycombe Wanderers v Coventry City
Big Matches
It is second against fourth at Kenilworth Road as Luton Town play host to Barnsley in the biggest match of the afternoon. You feel that is a big match for the promotion credentials of both sides. Leaders Portsmouth have a wonderful chance to pick up three more points when they host struggling AFC Wimbledon at Fratton Park while Sunderland in third place face a tricky trip to Bloomfield Road to take on a determined Blackpool side.
Best of the Rest
Elsewhere there are a couple of big matches involving the sides at the bottom of the league. Bottom of the pile Plymouth Argyle play host to Oxford United who are one spot outside the drop zone while Bradford City host Accrington Stanley. Charlton Athletic host the team who ended Luton’s winning run on Saturday in Walsall while Peterborough United take on Scunthorpe United with both teams wanting to start 2019 in style.

Betting
I’ll go with a couple of bets in this opening day of 2019 with the first one coming from Valley Parade where Bradford City can continue their excellent record form when they host Accrington Stanley. Bradford have only lost two of their last eight matches and they were at Luton and Sunderland, both of whom are unbeaten at home, and even then they had a perfectly good goal chalked off which would have got them a point against the Black Cats. Accrington won a couple of matches over Christmas but they beat a Shrewsbury side who are terrible on the road and Plymouth who are bottom of the table. They haven’t won any of the other eight in their last 10 matches though so I think they are well worth taking on against an improving Bantams who look great value with all the draw cover available.
Luton Town sit top of the 10 match form guide heading into 2019 while Barnsley sit fourth so two form teams are going to be doing battle at Kenilworth Road on Tuesday and I think that is going to lead to goals. I remember being very confident of goals when these two met on the box back in October and Barnsley won 3-2 that day with Luton having a perfectly good goal chalked off so goals are perfectly possible here. We know how good Luton are at home. Every stat known to man has been highlighted about their form but Barnsley score a lot of goals too. I don’t see either being happy with a point here so over 2.5 goals looks every bit the good bet it did when the two met at Oakwell earlier in the campaign.
