2018-19 Sky Bet League 1 – Wednesday 22nd August Matches Betting Preview

The midweek round of Sky Bet League 1 matches conclude on Wednesday evening when the final two fixtures take place with the focus on the title favourites Sunderland when they make the long trip to Gillingham.

There is one other match in the division which is almost impossible to be low key with Joey Barton in the technical area as Scunthorpe go up against Fleetwood Town. This league already has a condensed look to it in the middle so wins are vital.

Gillingham vs Sunderland

Two sides who have won two of their opening three matches meet at Priestfield Stadium when Gillingham host the title favourites Sunderland in a match which both sides can move further towards the top two with a win.

Both sides carry a goal threat into this match with Tom Eaves in good form for Gillingham and Josh Maja for Sunderland both netting three times this season already. I’ve seen Sunderland in action twice already and they look a mighty good side to me but they are ravaged by injuries. When they have everyone back they’ll stroll this division but a long trip after playing catch up in fitness having played Thursday and Sunday puts me off taking them at little over even money.

Scunthorpe United vs Fleetwood Town

The second match of the night sees two sides who have a complete slate of a win, a defeat and a draw doing battle at Glanford Park when Scunthorpe United take on Fleetwood Town in what should be a competitive affair.

Scunthorpe won their opening match of the season but haven’t been able to build on it although in fairness there is no shame in holding Walsall and being beaten by Sunderland right now. Fleetwood are unbeaten in two matches going into this game but have a few key injuries which may not help them much. As with the game above I would probably have been keen to take Scunthorpe had they not have played on Sunday so I’ll leave this one too.
