2018 ATP Miami Open Tennis – Day 9 Betting Preview

The quarter finals of the ATP Miami Open draw to a close on Thursday when the final two matches in the round are played out and by the end of a relatively calm day we will know the identity of the semi-finals.

Roger Federer was meant to be in action on this day of the tournament but he exited a few days ago so we are left with three stars of the present and future along with a veteran who is playing the best tennis of his career right now.

Day 8 Recap

The day session saw an easy win for John Isner which was what we didn’t want as it meant our outright bet Hyeon Chung bit the dust. The night session match is going on at the time of writing this preview although we did lose another bet in the Tuesday night session when Nick Kyrgios proved to be no match for Alexander Zverev.

Pablo Carreno Busta vs Kevin Anderson

The opening match of the two on the court on Thursday will be a repeat of the US Open semi-final from last year when Pablo Carreno Busta meets Kevin Anderson for the second time in as many tournaments. Anderson won their last 16 clash in Indian Wells last week to move to a 4-0 record over the Spaniard.

Carreno Busta has absolutely cruised through the draw so far this week. He is yet to drop a set in his three matches and has only dropped 12 games in total so he’s playing some excellent aggressive tennis. It has been much more of a struggle for Anderson. He was taken the distance by Karen Khachanov and then at times against a weary Frances Tiafoe he was up against it too.

There isn’t a huge amount between these two as evidenced by the fact they went to a final set tiebreak in Indian Wells last week. I fancy the slightly slower conditions here in Miami and the exceptional tennis that PCB has played could see him prevail here. Anderson is the favourite if for no other reason than on past record alone but Carreno Busta is overpriced.

Alexander Zverev vs Borna Coric

The last of the quarter finals looks a tasty encounter as the number four seed Alexander Zverev looks to push for a third Masters 1000 title when he takes on the Croatian player Borna Coric who is eyeing up back to back semi-finals having made the last four in Indian Wells last week. Coric leads their head to head record 2-0.

After a very disappointing time of it recently, and some early struggles here in Miami, we saw the best of the big German in the last 16 when he blazed his way past Nick Kyrgios in a confidence raising performance. Coric has been the distance in the last two rounds but he has shown excellent composure in the big moments of the deciding set which suggests he is not going to go easily here.

I think we are in for a tough and tasty quarter final here but anyone who followed me in on Coric for the quarter at 14/1 does not need to get involved again as if the Croatian wins this that bet will land. That is enough interest for me in what should be a great match to watch.
