2018 Dutch Darts Championship – Tournament Outright Betting Preview

The European Tour continues this weekend with the Dutch Darts Championship with the leading players in Europe heading to Maastricht for the third last event of the tour. The European Championship is looming on the horizon so each pound could make a difference this weekend.

Michael van Gerwen is the number one seed this week and with this being the first time the tournament has been held and with it in his homeland we know he will be itching to be the first winner.

The Format

We all know the format by now I’m sure but the 16 seeds face one of the 16 qualifiers in the last 32 of the tournament on Saturday. That is over the best of 11 legs with the winners going into the last 16 on Sunday afternoon over the same distance. The quarter finals are also the best of 11 legs on Sunday evening with the semi-finals and final on Sunday evening across 13 and 15 legs respectively.

Top Half

Michael van Gerwen is in the top half of the draw this weekend with the halves switched from last week. He will be tackled by seven other seeds in this half. They are Steve West, Joe Cullen, Daryl Gurney, James Wade, Max Hopp, Jonny Clayton and Stephen Bunting in what looks like a very competitive half.

There are some decent qualifiers in this part of the draw too with Kyle Anderson probably the pick of them. Jeffrey de Graaf has made it through to this stage of the tournament as well while Ricky Evans is another who is here. William O’Connor, Barrie Bates, Ryan Searle, Ritchie Edhouse and Ross Smith are the other qualifiers in this part of the draw.

Bottom Half

It is Peter Wright who is the leading seed in the bottom half of the draw this week but Ian White and Adrian Lewis will aim to be formidable opponents. The other seeds in this section see Dave Chisnall, Simon Whitlock, Gerwyn Price, Darren Webster and Mervyn King so there should be plenty of competition here too.

The qualifiers are led by Kevin Painter with the others being Rowby-John Rodriguez, Cristo Reyes, Darren Johnson, Wayne Jones, Josh Payne, Arron Monk and Darius Labanauskas who will be hoping to cause a shock or two as they try to progress through the draw.

Betting

I’ll go with one outright this week and in the absence of the likes of Michael Smith and Rob Cross there is a wide open bottom quarter which is just begging to be attacked. Ian White is the highest seed in it and if this was a floor tournament I might have chanced him but up on the stage I prefer to look elsewhere.

Adrian Lewis has been in good form in the majority of these European Tour events and there is a golden chance for him to go deep in another of them. His draw has already opened up with Wayne Jones his first opponent rather than the World Matchplay semi-finalist Jeffrey de Zwaan. He is unlikely to face a top opponent until the semi-final and there is no guarantee Wright will get that far anyway. I’ll take Lewis to take advantage of this draw this week.
