We have made it down to the semi-finals of the Fever-Tree Championships at the Queens Club and the four remaining men will all go in search of a place in Sunday’s final when they do battle on Saturday afternoon.
We have three superstars of the game who have made it through this far and one other player who has shown good form this week so everything is set up for a wonderful afternoon at the London venue.
Day 5 Recap
It was a day that promised so much on Friday but strangely there wasn’t a three set match in sight as the four winners were all far too good for their opponents. Marin Cilic, Nick Kyrgios, Novak Djokovic and Jeremy Chardy all came through relatively unopposed to take their place in Saturday’s semi-finals.
We had a winner and a loser on the day with Sam Querrey collapsing in the second set to deny us what looked like a certain winner after the first set went to a tiebreak. Chardy ensured nothing was lost on the day though as he was too good for Frances Tiafoe.
Marin Cilic vs Nick Kyrgios
The first semi-final of the tournament sees the number one seed and beaten finalist of last year, Marin Cilic, going up against the dangerous, albeit incredibly unpredictable talent of Nick Kyrgios for a place in the final.
Cilic powered his way through to this semi-final, dropping just one set along the way and looking pretty dominant on serve. Kyrgios has had to fight his way through three tough matches but it should be to his credit that he has knuckled down and won them when maybe in the past he might have lacked the fight.
These two have met twice in their careers but they were a fair while ago. I think we know what to expect from this match and that is for the server to hold sway throughout. I wouldn’t normally take a games line of 25.5 but this one looks littered with tiebreaks so I think it is the way to go here.

Jeremy Chardy vs Novak Djokovic
The second semi-final is an all-unseeded clash between Jeremy Chardy and Novak Djokovic. I’m sure the Frenchman will need no reminding of the fact he trails the Serbian 10-0 in their career record and worse still he has never won a set against him.
If that is going to change at any point you would suggest it might be here given that Chardy has won a tournament and made a final in another in the last fortnight while Djokovic is still coming back to peak form, but even then Djokovic has come through without dropping a set and there have been signs that his defensive skills are as good as ever.
I still think Djokovic will win this but I suspect that Chardy might keep it relatively tight. I would take the Frenchman on a handicap but I fear that the longer the match goes on the better Djokovic might work things out and begin to pull away so I’ll sit this one out.
