The German Masters gets started on Wednesday and it does so with a two session day of action inside the Tempodrom in Berlin. Some events hold the big names back but this one doesn’t as a number of them are in play on this first day.
Judd Trump, Mark Allen, Ding Junhui and the defending champion Anthony Hamilton are all on show on the first day of the tournament so we have much to enjoy over the course of Wednesday.

Afternoon Session
There is a slight lop-sidedness to the proceedings on Wednesday and as such as only have three matches in the afternoon session. Anthony Hamilton begins his title defence in the session. He takes on Jimmy Robertson while on the other TV table Ding Junhui goes up against Michael Georgiou. The other match is between Joe Perry and Yu Delu.
Evening Session
This is the session where Mark Allen and Judd Trump begin their campaigns. Trump goes up against Ben Woollaston while The Masters champion faces Matt Selt. Elsewhere there is a juicy match between Jack Lisowski and Ricky Walden while Fergal O’Brien and Mark Williams collide. Gary Wilson takes on our outright pick Martin Gould in the other match.

Betting
I like two on the opening day although we have to wait until the evening for both of them. Jack Lisowski is having a decent season and while Ricky Walden has put some form together in recent times I fancy Lisowski to come through here. He lost to Walden in Northern Ireland but I can forgive him that as he had a deep run in China the week before. Walden is improving but he remains what I would call one paced. Lisowski’s scoring should see him through here.
Judd Trump is in a bit of a crossroads at the minute. We saw him lose from well ahead in The Masters and then he suffered a shock defeat in the China Open qualifying which highlights he isn’t on top of his game. Ben Woollaston is the sort of player who can take advantage of that too. He is a decent scorer who has enough of a safety game to be a threat. I wouldn’t be surprised if Woollaston takes the win here but it is the beginning of a tournament so I’ll take the Leicester man on the handicap as an air of caution.
